We left our mother here temporarily while we got her house modified after she was discharged from hospital following a stroke. When we arrived there was no welcome, in fact, none of the staff knew she was coming, despite the fact that she had been assessed by them the day before. As a result they weren't aware of any of her requirements and even though they were told twice that she was on puréed food, they gave her ham sandwiches! Any time we went to visit there were never any staff supervising the common rooms where residents sat. On several occasions we had to go and look for staff for residents that were shouting for a nurse and on more than one occasion we witnessed some of the more mobile residents having to go and lookfor staff for the less mobile ones. When you went to look for staff, four or five of them could be found chatting in the office round the corner and down the corridor. After a day and half my mother had a fall. She said, 'when you call for staff they never come,' so had obviously given up waiting. Nobody contacted us to tell us she'd fell. The first we heard about it was when we went to visit and found her in an agitated state and we were told by her and another resident that she'd had a fall earlier. No doctor was called, it was only when the physio called a few days later and found she was still in a lot of pain that they decided to get her x rayed on the physio's advice. It turned out she had broke a bone in her pelvis and had to spend another four weeks in hospital. Prior to all of this happening they had rang us every night at about 9.30/10 o'clock looking us to come over and sit with her because they only had 3 night staff and couldn't cope with her. At £600 odd a week and with 33 residents surely they could afford to pay for adequate staff. In addition to all of this the general vibe from day one was not good. When we asked on the first day if someone could show her her room, if looks could kill, we would have been dead as the carer mumbled something under her breath about being very busy. We should have went with our gut feeling on the first day as apart from one or two pleasant members of staff, the rest of the time when we asked for anything we generally felt like we were being a nuisance. We were green to looking at nursing homes but have learnt to pay attention to how many staff are on the floor at all times and whether or not the welcome is friendly. Go with your gut feeling as it's probably right. If I could give this zero stars I would.
