I had seen adverts for their August Sky at Night evenings in August and was intrigued. In the event the 14 of us ages 5-78 had a totally brilliant evening! Thanks to the Planetarium team for an inspirational, hugely informative and fun evening. It really is the Island’s best kept secret. Spread the word, something for everyone!Visited onWeekdayReservation recommendedYes
Delightfully idiosyncratic. Kooky. Wonderful. Run by people who love what they do, but not necessarily the most organised. It was a rainy day, and this was a perfect activity. There were only two staff: an older fellow who was a bit slow and not too hot on the latest payment technologies, and a younger chap who was very enthusiastic. The younger chap wasn't allowed to sell tickets yet, and the older one was in the earlier late running show. This caused a chaotic backup of people waiting to buy tickets, squished into the shop. Everyone there took it with good grace and humour, but if you take yourself too seriously, you would hate it. The Hooke museum is small but interesting, especially if you don't know the man's manifold achievements. The actual shows are fun. Children will learn a lot. They have 49 different shows and we were shown 3 in one sitting. One was a little dated and listed Pluto as a planet, but another was more up to date and listed it as a planetoid.
What an incredible evening spent with the wonderful John and Paul. We were mainly first time star gazers in our group of 14 aged ranged from 5 to 70s. We began by witnessing the most beautiful sunset from this wonderful location. Then we were shown into the planetarium where Paul explained the theory behind the stars and what we were going to look. Such a knowledgeable man. We then went outside and met John with his lazer guide light and telescope we were able to see all the major stars, shooting stars, the Milky Way and even Saturn..the actual rings! John was so lovely and patient and enthusiastic with all ages in the group. Such warmth and knowledge. What a wonderful place. A must visit for all! Thank you Paul and John.
Great experience and a very knowledgeable host, this is a small planetarium but is just as good as any I have visited in the UK. Our host was incredibly knowledgeable and guided us through the evening sky and as a budding star gazer gave me lots of great tips and guidance to help navigate the night sky. I would definitely visit here again when I visit the Isle of Wight. We spent the whole day at Fort Victoria doing various activities which the Island Planetarium was one of.
I am in my late 40s and have always had a little interest in the night sky. The passion from John and Paul's education and live viewing has made me fall in love with it. This is a real hidden gem on the island. Sure, their website doesn't work and they don't always answer the phone. But don't let that put you off a wonderful experience. We even saw Saturn and her rings through the telescope. Amazing
A mixed experience. A basic but welcoming planetarium in an interesting and historic location. Wouldn't suggest making it the purpose of a visit, particularly travelling any distance, but if you happen to be in the area worth a try. Online or telephone booking option would have improved the experience for us as we were told on the phone we'd definitely get in if we turned up 15 mins before the show, but when did and tried to buy tickets for shows 1 and 2 hours ahead they were sold out. Also greater clarity about what shows are running, as we bought tickets for a second show and it turned out they were repeating them not according to the programme/not told when we bought the 2nd set of tickets and we had to get a refund.
Extremely informative and engaging astronomer led the fascinating talk and accompanied by a film projected on the dome ceiling. Eager to teach and answer questions. Well worth the 6 quid for an hour, learnt a lot and they were very grateful for our visit. Highly recommend
Im soooo happy their open again ! I enjoyed a 2pm showing the shows, and there are a selection that changes from time to time, are very good very informative and well produced and narrated ! The gentleman that runs it is very knowledgable and polite and answers any questions you have. Well worth a visit if you either love the night sky or have questions about it !
Would have loved this planetarium more if there was interaction between staff and visitors. It's essentially a very blurry video about the most common celestial objects with terms and language geared towards adults. Our young kids were restless and bored as they couldn't understand 90% of what was being said. We were expecting staff to talk it all through with us in a fun way, but the planetarium operator sat in the corner with headphones on...
DREADFULL. Staff was very unhelpfull. The gift shop full of rubbish very dated and boring nothing worth buying as it was just rubbish and tat. Displays need a vast improvement and the layout is poor .Photos and videos that are shown as part of the displays are not profesional and dated web site needs to be redone and updated and redesigned. The information that really matters is not there. Displays show lack of imagination thought and not layed out correctly no interactive displays avaliable on vist. Management unhelpfull and very rude to customers. There was hardly anything to do with Robert hook as advertised dispite being on the trail nothing to do there was nothing regarding the Black Arrow project. You are better of visting the observatory as they know there stuff and will go out there way to help and assist unlike the plantarium management. ITS A JOKE. This is a pitty as its set in fantastic suroundings and your better of visting the orther attractions and leaving this out as they are more informative and ran better. Ive given it one star but thats becouse of its surroundings NOT BECOUSE OF the Island Planetarium.very dissapointed with the managenents response to this reveiw this was a genuine vist by myself and not a fake one as stated in comments box by the planetarium managementSINCE BEEN REMOVED This is a genuine review I am just simply saying as I find.l find it disrespectfull they have asked Google to remove this comment because I have nothing positive to say about the attraction.I simply say as I find I can assure the management it's not personnel but constructive criticism
