A great day out for all ages on the vintage 1930s ex-London Underground tube trains on the Island Line. The tickets are great value - only £4.75 return from Ryde to Shanklin and offer an unrivalled way to see some of the island’s main towns. The trains and scenery are totally charming and unlike anything else on the UK network - unmissable when visiting the Isle of Wight.
If you want to grab a bit of railway history get on 80 year former London Underground trains whilst you can. Only nos 6 and 8 are still running and they are being retired at the end of the year. I used to go on these 2 regularly when a nipper 44 years ago and they still retain their unique character. What makes the ride great fun is the state of the track. The seats are soft and at speed you are bounced along as if on a fairground ride. There is nothing like this. Here's to finding these legends a good home. Help The London Transport Traction Group bring one back to London.
The trains are re purposed 'vintage' London Underground trains and don't quite offer the refinements of modern rolling stock. By this I mean they are loud, creaky and bumpy! For tourists they are fine, but not much fun if you are a commuter!
Indescribable. I really enjoyed this service. I laugh and laugh, and smile along the way. Made my fantastic holiday. It s simply entertaining in my book. Cute. Vintage. i love it.
What fun! The current rolling stock is being updated in 2020 so what better time to enjoy the vintage railway. I do agree that it's a bit of a bumpy ride but it's a fun way of spending a couple of hours on the Isle of Wight!
No issues with the staff, who are worthy of 4-5 stars, but my review is aimed at the vehicles. I hope you have strong neck muscles if you choose to sit down on these bone rattling antique trains. It really is like taking part in a railway rodeo. Standing is easier, but if you're an adrenaline junkie, take a seat and hold on to your hat literally.
Dreadful service. The staff are great but you tend not to ride the staff, you ride the trains and the service is simply unreliable. Turned up today to get the train to Ryde - cancelled! No guard. Great, NOT!
Toilet facilities should be open later
I love the trains they might be old and bumpy but it adds to the fun and the view is great
Good quality train service although does require upgrades and staff are friendly and always ready to help
