Having read great reviews and heard similar positive feedback from local friends, we were looking forward to dinner at the Inn on the Hill. However, since most of these reviews were written, there appears to have been a change of ownership and whilst the menu has remained the same the quality clearly hasn't. The slightly worn Argentinian steakhouse theme is at odds with the Italian delivery. This shouldn't affect the enjoyment of the food, but unfortunately, the steaks we were served were okay, but inconsistently cooked and presented in a manner you'd expect of a local cafe. The price point is what you would expect from a high quality restaurant, but the food is, at best average. On the plus side, the wine menu is pretty good and the waiter's knowledge supported it. There is a desire for a decent local restaurant and tremendous amount of good will shown to any owner willing to redeliver quality. Unfortunately, The Inn on the Hill currently falls way short of delivering.
I visited with my wife today. We ordered starters and mains. My starter was forgotten and had to be chased. By the time it arrived my wife had finished hers. The mains turned up together but minus the requested side-salad. We did not bother to chase it. We ordered a second round of drinks which never arrived yet when we asked for the bill the salad and extra drinks were on it. We queried this with the waitress and they were removed. She was the best aspect of the place but she was let down by her colleagues who seemed good at ensuring things appeared on the bill but were not so good at getting them to you. The place was not busy so there was no excuse for such bad organisation. We had to pay by cash as they were having trouble with their card-reader. This was a big problem potentially as there are no handy cash machines at all so what you would do if you only had plastic I don't know. I've given three stars as the steak was the one of the best I've ever had and, despite everything, I would go back and give them a second chance as it is a nice comfortable place. It just needs to improve its service to justify its prices. EDIT An important thing to note is that the kitchen is not open round the clock. It is open for lunch and for dinner from 6pm. Outside of this you can only get drinks and basic pub snacks such as crisps and nuts.
Not very many people in, due to fireworks. not much atmosphere. Food was beautiful all the same, I had a great steak. Bit over priced salad, 12.50 for a beef tomato, mozzarella, basil and rocket....i'm a chef and know this doesn't warrent this price....but nice all the same would come back x
This place offers probably the best steaks I have had in this country, personal recommendation is a sirloin steak with a monkey gland sauce, sounds odd but give it a try!
Friendly service and food is always excellent.
