Story

We offer a comprehensive mix of classes in Karate-do, Karate-jitsu and Karate-jutsu for adults and children covering skill levels from beginner through intermediate to advanced. The group has operated around Calderdale for almost 30 years where it has been passionately driven forward by the same individuals. We pride ourselves on trying to be a modern thinking group built on traditional values encompassed by its seniors.

If you or your children are thinking of taking up martial arts practice the Independent Martial Arts introduction classes are structured and designed around the needs of the beginner covering the necessary basic exercises, simple repetitive exercises, movements and flexibility routines and co-ordination skills to aid further advancement.

A good understanding of the correct use of training equipment and safety in the dojo (training hall/room) will also be covered. All the necessary skills learned in your introduction will be from the traditional form of Shotokan Karate system (which is an ideal all-round base to build from). One of the main overall training objectives is not only to reproduce and hold fast the traditional and artistic design and dynamics along with the internal and character growth of the individual through the practice of Karate, but also to understand as much as possible in an applied, functional and practical sense.

For anyone looking for a Karate group local to the Halifax area the Independent Martial Arts (IMA-Nightingale group) which operates from North Bridge Leisure Centre should be considered and tried before you just go to the first martial arts club which you visit. The facilities are great with ample parking in the centre of town with easy access from all main routes and you have the option of making use of the leisure centre’s facilities while your other half or kids are safely in their class. Everyone in the same building busy doing exercise, it’s great and easy to organise. The teachers are welcoming and offer classes to suit all levels with a strong focus on the early introduction and beginner activity to help anyone and most ages make a good start to Karate training with a great beginner package. A well recommended class and group of people.
