Imperial War Museum North

About

IWM North is one of the five branches of the Imperial War Museums - the only one outside the South East of England.

Story

Visit the award-winning IWM North, part of Imperial War Museums, and experience amazing personal stories in Daniel Libeskind’s iconic building on the Quays.

Marking the Centenary of the First World War, the From Street to Trench exhibition explores the lives of people from the North West of England during the conflict. A changing programme of events, including tours and performances, also marks the occasion.

The award-winning Big Picture Show is a 360-degree audio-visual experience unique to IWM North. Using surround sound, projected moving images and photographs, the show brings to life people’s experiences of war. It immerses you in the action, creating a sensory experience which is totally involving, and often moving.

Dare you climb the 180 steps in the Air Shard or take the lift that rises at an angle to stand almost 100 feet in the air to see across Manchester, The Quays and beyond?

Tours are available daily, and storytelling, creative and object handling sessions are on every weekend and during school holidays.

Experience stunning views in the WaterShard Café & Kitchen where all our food and cakes are handmade daily with local produce.

Retro gifts and souvenirs are available in our onsite shop.

Brilliant museum, well laid out. We spent 2.5 hours walking around, reading about the history and had a quick bite to eat in the cafe. Really interesting and formative. Great for kids and family day out. Also there are 5 minutes of motivational and emotional videos shown. Really moving. I definitely recommend visiting.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

We had a great time visiting IWM. Museum has very interesting exhibits. Staff were very courteous and shared lot of useful information about the museum. Museum has several accessibility features and they are marked clearly through out the museum. We can borrow wheel chairs. There is accessible entrance, elevators and also accessible restrooms. There special hearing aids for hearing impaired and movie in the main hall supports sign language. Overall museum is well equipped with accessible features.
The IWM North is definitely worth a visit. There is a main exhibit space which has a low slope and low level lighting. There is an hourly Big Picture Show which has audio, signed and subtitles. The museum has kids backpacks to borrow which contain ear defenders. There is good clear signage throughout building and lifts. There is also a cafe and gift shop.

This museum is certainly worth a visit if you are in the vicinity. The primary exhibits and projections are engaging, and they showcase artifacts from various conflicts, primarily from the past century. Among the notable highlights are the Matilda II tank and the Harrier VTOL jet.
This museum is so so good. I can’t describe much. Just visit and donate some penny!! Lot of history and stuffs from world war. And the motivational/emotional 5 minutes show in between when you’re inside is also an experience!!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Had a very emotional visit to the War Museum today. Through objects, films, interactive displays and information boards featuring the words of people who've lived through the First and Second World Wars, I was completely immersed in a dark time of our history not so long ago. The exhibition just makes you realise how wasteful and painful war and fighting each other is. The museum is entirely accessible for people using a wheelchair - the entrance, the toilets, the exhibition halls, the lift. There are wheelchairs to borrow as well. Just be careful - the main exhibition hall's floor is slightly slanted! There are also accessibility features for people with visual impairment, such as booklets with large font, subtitles for those with hearing impairment, and a special backpack at the entrance for kids and anyone really with headphones for blocking loud noises, a teddy bear and more.
Very informative and a great place to learn. Everything inside is very professional and definitely worth while making an effort to see. There is always a new exhibit. When we came the exhibit was about the troubles. Very well layed out and respectful.
Very good atmosphere here. Lots to read, lots of information and so many artifacts from so many different wars. One thing I was surprised to see was a room dedicated to the wars in Ireland. That's something that was never taught about when I was in school, so I learned a lot about the brutality of the war over there. All together a great visit and highly recommended. Thank you for the displays.
