Hulme Garden Centre

About

A garden centre with a difference that makes a difference!

Story

Hulme Community Garden Centre (HCGC) is a unique community led inner-city horticultural project and charity (XR39212). Our mission is to bring the local community together through gardening. As a not-for-profit organisation we provide low-cost plants to the local community but we are foremost a volunteer and education hub promoting horticultural and sustainability issues to schools, colleges, the local community and wider public. We are a community resource in two of Manchester's most deprived areas, Hulme and Moss Side, providing a community garden space and running free workshops for the local community, a wide range of socially excluded groups (in particular people with learning disabilities and/or mental health problems), schools and voluntary organisations. HCGC is underpinned by organic principles and promotes sustainability, horticulture and the environment, civic engagement and voluntary activity, urban gardening and food production, independent living, health and well-being. We also provide back to work and skills training and placements for longer-term unemployed people. We have been established for 10 years and now welcome over 5,000 visitors per annum, all of whom have access to free expert horticultural advice.

Mission

Hulme Community Garden Centre was established in 1998 to bring horticulture opportunities for all, greening Hulme and Moss Side. We provide leisure and recreational facilities in the interests of social welfare through the provision of community gardens and activities in horticulture.

We provide opportunities for volunteers to learn horticultural skills.

Our mission is to use this initiative, and the creativity of local people, to regenerate inner-city land into an accessible and sustainable community garden and nursery.

Products

We are a not for profit organisation and any surplus made from takings is reinvested into the project. We are reducing environmentally damaging practices were possible. Plants produced on site are grown to organic standards in peat free compost, without the use of animal by-products, artificial growth hormones, pesticides or fertilizers. Pots are reused and waste recycled.

Friendly and helpful staff! Our horticulturally qualified and experienced staff are on hand to answer your gardening questions and provide useful advice on organic and sustainable growing.

It was nice to wander around, and was a nice 10 minute break from my cycling. It's a nice hidden gem in Hulme. The staff are lovely and willing to chat and provide good recommendations. I ended up leaving with a nice Peace Lily. I was recommended to go on Thursdays as that's when new stock comes in.
A lovely little garden centre with a wide selection of greenery for every nook of your home inside or out. With an "everything is for sale" feel there are plenty of hidden opportunities. The owners are friendly and helpful and it's obvious that a lot of love goes into the place and in the end I purchased two cute mini cacti
Great variety of plants and pots. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful!
Energetic and helpful staff with a fantastic selection of plants and rock-bottom prices. Definitely coming back here soon!
Love it here! I go here to get all of my plants. They’re open 7 days a week and they’re always getting new stock. Very helpful and they all have good knowledge on the plants
Such a wonderful place! It feels like a little forrest just outside of the city, great selection of plants and sustainable products, they were also opening an outdoor cafe last time I visited!
Great cakes at the cafe, and always lovely walking round the community garden at the back
