Past this little abbey and noticed the sign saying open for tours , teas so thought I would take a look as the abbey looked quite interesting, but I didn't get inside as door was locked , so can't really give it an in depth review , may have better luck next time I go . 2 years later I go to this little abbey and doors still locked even though sign says open .
What a fabulous little gem in a small sleepy village. Interesting history dating back to King Edward I and Robert de Bruce and beyond. Inside there is a small entrance that leads you to the hall. The stained glass were beautiful pieces of art. On the way out to the left is a small museum of it's history
Was closed despite signs outside saying open and welcome. We'll come back another time.
An ancient abbey built over 600 years ago. It was extensively fire damaged about 8 years ago and has been rebuilt recently. Some nice stained glass windows and an exhibition of the history of the abbey and area. Large grave yard outside the abbey with many of the graves in good condition so if any of your relatives were buried there, there is a good chance that the gravestone may be readable.
Fantastic exhibit and the Archeology was wonderful!
Beautiful relaxed Cumbria village steeped in history. Robert the Bruce's father is interred in the Abbey which has been there since the 12th century.
A rather plain church that was once the nave of the abbey. A phoenix from the ashes, it was completely gutted by fire in 2006. A little exhibition of the history is well done but despite the signs the tea room wasn't open
This former Cistertian Abbey in the village of Abbeytown in Cumbria is a beautiful place. The remaining nave is all that is left but pre-Reformation it was a much larger, wealthy abbey linked to Melrose and Rievaulx. A fire in 2006 destroyed the roof but this has been replaced and much work added to get it back into good condition. Well worth a visit.
Mostly shut at moment due to covid, but when open nice remnant of old Abbey. Fully refurbished after arson attack.
Great walk through experience of truly authentic English Scottish heritage
