Thomas Holley & Son is a long-established business in Normanton, West Yorkshire.  The Bathroom Installations page of their very impressive website invites potential customers to “Take advantage of Thomas Holley & Son’s competitively-priced bathroom installations services …”

I made initial inquiries by telephone.  Thomas and Paul Holley visited my home to see what needed to be done.  I was later sent an estimate of the cost which I accepted.  The two men arrived at my home on time on the agreed date to fit a new inset sink and replace the wooden surround.  The job was completed in just under two hours.

I had been told that it had not been easy sourcing an inset sink.  Those comments however did prompt me to do some research Online.  The cost of materials was much lower than I had thought would be the case.  I wrote to Paul Holley requesting a breakdown of costs and was shocked when I received the reply informing me that the cost of labour was £200 plus VAT.

The job was without doubt a one-man job.  There was absolutely no need for two men to attend.  The presence of two men rather than one would have made only a very minimal difference to the time needed to complete the job.

I have subsequently made inquiries about the type of work I had done in my house.  I now know that other businesses would have charged much less for the work done.  One long-established business quoted labour charges of £150 per day.

I wrote to Thomas Holley and Son to invite comment.  I did not receive a reply. It is impossible for me to conclude that their charges are competitive.  I would in fact say that labour charges of £100 plus VAT per hour are excessive and unreasonable.
