Hole in t' Wall

About

The 'Hole in t'Wall' (officially called The New Hall Inn) is the oldest pub in Bowness, built in 1612 and nothing much has changed, apart from electricity

Story

As its name suggests, this is not an easy pub to find....

To track down this 401-year-old inn, you have to turn off down a narrow little Windermere lane called Low Side, and, at the point where it meets another narrow lane called Low Fold, look sharply to the right and keep an eye out for wooden tables.

On the outer wall, there's a mural depicting Thomas Longmire, who was in charge here from 1852 to 1862, at the same time as being champion wrestler of all England ("a quiet-looking giant", observed Charles Dickens, who drank here in 1857).

Inside, there are fireplaces, both active with flames, and dormant and rusting, in the form of ancient stoves. Some are in the ground-floor bar, others down the little staircase in the lower Smithy Bar.

Here, a large sign bears witness to the days when this part of the pub was a forge, with the words: "The blacksmith he did sweat in here, and slake his thirst with Hartley's beer".

This, it turns out, is how the pub got its name. Known originally as the New Hall Inn, it became the Hole in t'Wall thanks to the gap in the brickwork that was knocked through so that the blacksmith could be served a beer while at his anvil.

These days, of course, it's not just large men with hammers who can have a pint of Hartley's. The firm's XB bitter (4.0% abv) is a regular fixture, as are fellow ales Dizzy Blonde (a gentle 3.8%) and the slightly more urgent Unicorn (4.2%), both from Robinsons, who took over Hartley's 30 years ago.

The food is unfussy and Cumbrian. First prize for unpretentiousness goes to the tasty, fried potato "spirals" served in a large pile with tomato chutney.

This truly is a great authentic blast from the past, filled with local real ale, good banter, great food and a warm heart that other establishments only dream of owning.

"A warm welcome awaits you at The Hole in t’ Wall. Whether you are looking for a pint of award-winning ale, a craft gin or a wholesome meal we’ve got you covered. Please note Dogs are only allowed outside due to the limited space inside."

Great very cute old pub. Lovely selection of beers. Live band when we went and lots of space for seating. There is an outside area with picnic benches and it is dog friendly. They also do food, we only had the scampi but it was delicious pub food. A must-visit if you're in the area!
First time visitor dropping by for some liquid refreshment after a walk in the rain. Slightly hidden away off the main road but worth seeking out. Wasn't sure what to expect from the outside, but was greeted by a nice warm fire upon entry and a good array of drinks. Cute and idellic, there's certainly sense of history about the place and thoughts of all the stories those walls would have from hundreds of years. I mean, if Charles Dickens stopped off here, it's good enough for me
Our Friday night haunt. Great atmosphere, really nice pub-food, Friday nights BSE live music Blood Shot Eyes - three excellent local musicians playing a great mix of folk and well loved pop. Engaging and entertaining. Very highly recommended. A lovely feel of belonging is what stands out.
Have very fond memories of this pub. . First visited in October 1974 and had my first pints of Hartleys'. Then played football. Pure Amber nectar. The Ulverston brewery was long ago bought out and closed by Robinsons of Stockport. This pub serves great food as well. About £12 - 13 for a main. Lovely fire. Great atmosphere. Beer patio to front. Often packed. Choice of two Robbie's beers. Unicorn and Dizzy Blond. Lovely oint of Unicorn enjoyed by Paulicarus.

This is a great pub. Really friendly staff, excellent food and value for money, within a fantastic setting. If you are anywhere near this pub, pay it a visit!
I've been visiting the Hole in t'wall for years, maybe 7/8 at least! It's ab absolute gem of a pub right in the heart of Bowness, two minute walk from the mere, the hills, the shops and the main Street of the town It's a very historic building dating back to 1612!! With loads of original features too, I've not met anyone who doesn't like the building and the decor inside, Charles Dickens was a visitor too and if he liked it then you know you're into something good! The staff are genuine and naturally friendly with advise on the ales, food and offers they have on. They have a nice menu with the classics and some special offers, vegan options too which is great, great prices and portions too! Nice stocked bar with everything you could need with local beer, cider and spirits, I think what's nice with this pub is it's locals aswell and tourists visiting. It's also got a lovely little outside patio area which is a bit of a suntrap if the weather's good! My favourite pub them ways, no competition!
Great pub friendly staff loads of character never had food so can't comment on that but people's food looked good...
Cracking oldie worldie pub! This 16th century pub is packed with charm and quirkiness! The staff including the management are friendly and professional. The ale is always fresh and tasty and at the right price!! If you're in Bowness, don't leave without a visit! Cheers Nigel and Claire
