We booked back in October for 2 Superior Double rooms for an overnight stay 3rd/4th December, but unfortunately our friends had to cancel last minute, due to health issues. We had requested the Main House on booking, as it was our first visit to this hotel. On first impressions, the hotel looked imposing and impressive. Before we checked in, we were directed to a very muddy car park, some way from the entrance.! The receptionist gave us our room key and directed us to an annexe Priory Court which was some walk away in the rain. This was room 56 on the first floor and although quite a large room, it was basic with a small double bed and definitely not the Superior King size that we had booked and paid for. Not a glass for any water or toothbrushes and a couple of sachets of instant coffee…..hardly superior. We are in our seventies and it was a bit of a struggle up two flights of stairs with our overnight baggage. The main door to the building had a security lock which needed a code. This was broken, leaving us feeling exposed. The entrance to this building was very shabby with scattered rubbish around. Very disappointed to be honest. We tried to see if another room was available but we were unable to locate the receptionist during our entire stay. On checking out there was nobody on reception once again so we just “posted” our key without being able to address any issues that we had. Breakfast was buffet style. It was ok. Bit lukewarm. But once again, there were no staff to be seen. We also had problems with our final invoice, much too long winded to go into. All in all, it was a very disappointing first time visit to this hotel. However, on a more positive note, the location is fantastic with lovely surroundings. This hotel would be great if a bit more time and money was invested.
We had the most wonderful afternoon tea at this truly special hotel. The building itself is beautiful, set within fabulous gardens that take your breath away. We arrived for afternoon tea and were warmly welcomed — the staff were so accommodating and even arranged for our table to be set outside so we could enjoy the most beautiful view.nnThe tea itself was delightful: the crockery was charmingly quirky, the scones were deliciously fresh and fluffy, and the selection of sandwiches and cakes was just perfect. The staff couldn’t have been lovelier — polite, friendly, and genuinely keen to make our visit special.nnThank you so much for such a memorable experience. This is a place that truly stands out and we can’t wait to return.
This hotel is what used to be a monastery priory with several buildings, a very large lawn used for concerts and special events, an equipped conference room, a very pleasant inside restaurant-bar, a separate breakfast room, and very nice people.nOur room was in a separate building and was in good condition but with a slightly dated feeling and not great lighting in the bathroom. But, the bed was enormous and the room clean.nThe location of the hotel is perfect in that it is a minute or two walking distance from the town so it is quiet but is only a few minutes walk from the center of town where there are lots of shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants. Hitchin is a very charming residential town and area.
Well there is not alot i can say that is good.nRoom not cleaned properly, dust left were the cleaner doesn't want to reach. Cold as heating not coming on till after 7, mid October nights getting cold. Bathroom no hot water until you run the hot tap for at least 10 mins. Shower cubicle very cramped. The gile building needs attention, dacor dated paper showing signs of coming of tge wall, paintwork needs sorting.Food over cooked or left in warming oven too long. In general this is a place to avoid.
Such an awful firework display event at Hitchin Priory with the organisers now having deleted their email and blocking people on social media. Really unfortunate as the event had the potential to be great. Hitchin Priory unwilling to help but I hear the same complaints happened in 2024 so will absolutely be avoiding events here in the future.
