We are now in our 3rd Hitchambury built home in a period of 25+ years. The last 2 of these being custom build projects where we have deliberately chosen to work with Hitchambury as our master contractor/builder. We are just over 18 months into living in our most recent custom build home built by them. The quality of build and attention to detail has been terrific in all our experience with them, and we have recommended them to numerous friends and contacts. As is expected with any new build we have had a number of minor snagging/remediation items and in every case the follow-up has honestly been fantastic. Speedy, no issues and quality resolution - couldn't be happier with our experience of the quality of build and "after-sales" care.
We bought a newly-built Hitchambury house in 2007 and have found them to be very quick to wash their hands of any responsibility for anything that they are not strictly legally liable for. Recently we had a slow leak from a pipe behind a wall in a first-floor toilet that had caused water to spread underneath the ceramic floor tiles and into the ceiling of the ground-floor integral garage. As well as the repair to the leaking pipe, the tiles had to be all taken up and replaced. It caused nearly £2000 worth of damage. Our plumber said that the leak was caused by the original plumbers connecting two pipes of different diameters resulting in a leak and a slow drip that had been continuing from when the house was built. This was why it took so many years for the consequences to become apparent. Of course, this meant that it was well outside the NHBC warranty period but there was no doubt that the damage was a direct result of shoddy workmanship by Hitchambury and/or their sub-contractors. However, all we got in response to our letter to them about the matter was a characteristically curt and disdainful two-sentence reply accepting no responsibility whatsoever for the botched work. Instead, they hid behind the expired warranty and furtively avoided even mentioning the issue that caused the damage. Similarly, a few weeks after we purchased the house in 2007 the boiler broke down. It was winter and temperatures were below freezing so, without heating or hot water, we had no choice but to move into temporary accommodation. Rather than offering us any compensation for our expense and inconvenience as a result of their faulty workmanship, Hitchambury's only response, following a director's visit to our home, was to offer to lend us...an electric heater! So don't expect much sympathy from them if anything goes wrong in your house. In our experience, if they're not legally obliged to do anything about it...they won't.
I had to write a review after visiting one of Hitchambury's homes - WOW, I am so impressed, the attention to detail and exquisite design is superb, I fell in love with it the moment I walked in the door.
