It's an ok walk but does not stand out from many other woodland walks in the area. Popular with mountain bikers, runners and dog walkers. The walk from the Somme Museum can be muddy in places and if you are lucky you will see foxes and deer.
I loved the walk to the Tower from Whitespots Country Park. It's very hard and so easy to find. It's like the saying, Can't see the Forest with the Trees in the way. I used the app Map My Walks and Google maps, but a mountain biker give me the best advice. Just walk along the paths that run along the edge of the Golf Club, but even when Google maps says that I'm just a min from it, you still can't see it, with the trees in the way. When you do get to the Tower you just get to look at it. It can be hired for Holiday Let's. There's not a path around it's outside that you can walk so you can see all of the four sides. The forest around it and all the walking/biking trails remind me of a Large Maze, which was a bit of fun. I followed the golf club ground from Whitespot on my way there and it was almost 2 miles from the carpark. I returned by the forest bondry wall that was beyond the large mature trees, that where planted at the same time that the Tower was built. Unlike Scrabo Tower, there no view from here, just more Trees. Although I give it 3 stars, my day finding it from Whitespots Country Park The Lead Mines with all its history made it a 5 Star day walking with my 4 legged family member.
Lovely place and the manager is very kind and friendly. If you have free time, you should rest here for a couple of days.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

Nice walk up through the forest to get to the tower, the paths are better than I expected. Could do with more parking at the road side and some markers to show you the way. It was a very enjoyable walk with a fantastic tower to see. You can stay in the tower but unfortunately it only accommodates two people.
Lovely wall, not much parking as the entrance is right at the road side, 2 1/2 miles round walk but so beautiful.
Love Helen's Tower. It's a nice walk up through the woods but if you ever get a chance to visit and see inside you should do so. It's amazing and the views from the top are spectacular.
Not much to see when you get there but it's a nice walk up through the woods. Most of it is gravel track but if you come up from the Somme Centre there are some very muddy bits so wear boots. The tower can be rented as self-catering accommodation and there is a Heritage Open Day once a year when you can get to see inside.
Lovely walk up to the tower with the kids. There was a great rope swing which made it for them. I'd wear footwear more suitable for mud next time!
Helen's Tower & Clandeboye Forest, Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. Beautiful walk through broadleaved and mixed woodland area that will take you up to a local landmark, i.e. Helen's Tower. The tower was designed in 19th century by a Scottish architect William Burn and the project was carried out by Lord Dufferin in 1861 as part of a larger landscaping project. The name comes from the name of Lord Dufferin's mother to whom the tower had been dedicated. The area surrounding the tower was used as a training ground for soldiers during World War I before they headed out to battle of Somme in 1916. If you approach the place from Crawfordsburn Road, you will find a little parking spot by the road past the hotel on your left. It's not signposted but you will see a little wooden entrance to the farm land looking area. It will take you approximately 20 min on foot to get to the tower. You will surely enjoy the views, ponds, beautiful woodland areas and a nice piece of architecture at the end of the trail. As you go along the trail you will find signs for Helen's Tower. Just follow them until you've reached your destination...Enjoy!
