I only found out recently that this place existed, and what a little gem it is. We had pre-arranged with the manager that we could put our small dog in her doggy pram and bring her with us - its wonderful to find a place that is so accommodating. The staff were friendly and informative, which helped make the experience such a joy. The museum is small, but a real treasure. Most of us oldies will be familiar with something being described as "Heath Robinson" from the eccentric contraptions he drew, but I imagine he's less well-known to younger generations. What I hadn't appreciated was what a very fine illustrator he was, and what a reputation he had during the early 20th century. So I've been entertained and educated. Oh, and the gift shop is delightful. The museum is set in a lovely little park where we enjoyed walking the dog in spite of the weather. There is also a very decent cafe. A pleasant green suburb, Pinner really doesn't seem like a place where you'd find a museum, but it really is worth a visit if you love art and are fond of English eccentricity.
It's surprising how few people remember Heath Robinson. His wonderful cartoons and excellent sense of humour seem to have been quite a constant in my life. Think of the artist version of PG Wodehouse. This museum for him is small but perfect, capturing his origins, with and talent superbly. There's a very good cafe adjacent as well!
What a lovely find in a park! I loved finding Heath Robinson illustrations as a wee boy and to find his museum open, well staffed and well supported is a joy. There is a wonderful interactive room for children of all ages up to grandparent ! and an exhibition of HR work and a further gallery, this month with the art and history of wood carving. The cafe next door was equally well stocked, staffed and reasonable, overlooking a pond full of birds. The photo is a detail from an illustration that numismatists will recognise as a gold coin grading system, still in use today.
We visited Pinner specifically to come and see this small museum and had bought our tickets in advance, which I would recommend. What a pleasure to spend time looking at so many brilliant examples of Heath Robinson's illustrations and artwork! There are two small galleries here....one is a general history of gallery explaining and showing the artistic development of this master illustrator which many examples of his humourous and more serious drawings. I've always loved his wartime drawings.... The second gallery exhibits Heath Robinson's Shakespeare illustrations which are very fine and very worthwhile taking time over. There is also a really good shop with some lovely books and prints of his work. I asked and the man on the reception confirmed that they have a full online shop service, so if you have a lengthy underground/ train journey home, as we had, you can order for delivery. We were impressed! It was well worth an hour and 40 minute journey to come and have a look at this excellent small museum! I can heartily recommend a visit if Heath Robinson's illustrations interest you. Plenty of information on the website.
Amazing place. Really wanted to visit for a long time, wasn't disappointed. He's an inspirational figure, a visionary in many ways. All lovingly put together in this cathedral like building . Really good.
Nice gift shop, but unfortunately not free, when I thought it was prior, as a very local Pinner resident. Understandable though, and definitely worth visiting to learn about the history of Pinner and activities which take place.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Small but delightful quirky drawings, very good shop. Excellent cafe in biilding opposite, plus lake, ducks and budgies!
I was privileged to be on a private guided tour for a group before the museum opened to the public. The gallery is well laid out and takes you on a chronological journey through the life and work of Heath Robinson. The rooms are light and airy, and the shop is well stocked.
A great informative place about a man you realise was ahead of his time with drawings and artwork that is funny at time with a serious undertone, find pictures of Silent Discos, the civilisation of rugby and all drawn before 1939. There is even a manual version of the Banksy picture shreader. There is nothing Heath Robinson about this place.
Small and by definition specialised. There is a spacious art gallery attached and we went there for a brilliant travelling wood engraving exhibition that was being hosted.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
