Lovely location to base a walking break around. Recommended both the Little John and the George.
Two platform station in the Hope Valley. On the Manchester to Sheffield line with frequent services to Sheffield, Manchester and other Hope Valley stations. Has a small car park. In the village there are several cafes, restaurants and pubs, a garage, supermarket, butcher, bakers etc. Great place for outdoor/walking gear with three outdoor shops. Good place to start a cycle ride or walking.
This is a small unstaffed country station. The trains that stop here are short and bus-like, typically 2 carriages long, and they stop at all the minor stations between Sheffield and Manchester - great for hillwalking. The express trains and the fright trains just blast through without stopping. There's some shelter, but nothing substantial and fully enclosed for winter.
Hathersage station - small and perfectly formed. Direct trains from Sheffield to Manchester take you to this most beautiful village in the hope valley with access to great walking, hathersage outdoor gear shops, and cafes.
This is a great place to walk to or from, from or to a number of locations. I particularly like getting here after a walk and going round some of the pubs for food and a good sit down but also for the brilliant florist Wild About Flowers, well worth popping in even if just for a poke around. There are a lot of dog friendly places and if you're out walking and some piece of kit breaks, there are two outdoor shops with plenty of stock : also, the Greengrocers is brilliant!nEdit. I completely forgot! There's the Youth Hostel and a few hotels here too! So if you want to do the camping and walking thing without the camping... Hathersage!
