About

Set in 15 beautiful acres, Gordale is an award-winning garden and home centre with a loyal team of helpful experts to ensure your visit is a memorable one.

Story

Established in 1948, Gordale is one of the oldest garden centres in Britain and has continued to grow and expand ever since. Gordale was originally bought by Harold and Joyce Nicholson whilst they worked on a farm in Wiltshire. They arrived by motorbike and sidecar, along with their six ducks, while their cows followed by train before being walked from Hooton station to Gordale. We’ve always been a bit different! Initially Gordale operated as a smallholding, producing goods for the local markets, and the original cafe was famous for its chicken salads – a luxury during the rationing of WW2.

In 1949, Gordale was set to be sold at auction, with Harold and Joyce planning a new life in Canada. However, whilst many bids were received, the highest failed to meet the reserve price by just £50. Instead it was decided to stay and make a go of it and we’re so happy they did! Over the years, trade increased and goods had to be bought in to supplement those produced on site to cope with the nation’s growing interest in gardening.

In 1979, after studying horticulture in England and Holland Mr and Mrs Nicholson's son Peter Nicholson took over the company. Today, Gordale remains at the forefront of garden centre retailing. We never stand still. We always have lovely ideas in the pipeline. We would like to invite you to come and see why we are one of Cheshire’s leading garden and home centres and why, over the years, we’ve won ‘Britain’s Best Garden Retailer’, ‘Independent Retail Outlet of the Year’ and ‘Garden Centre of the Year’.

One of those places that never seems to get stale with its ever-changing displays and events. The Japanese garden themed display inside was really great. A little pricey compared to some places perhaps but for the range of plants/trees/shrubs/furniture/gift items it’s well worth paying the little extra to be able to get what you need.
Not been here for over 25 years, & it's changed a bit, but is still a lovely garden centre. It's lost the aquatics possibly decades ago but has a nice lake/ garden area, with loads of Pea Hens.
This must be the largest garden centre in the Wirral. It can take a few hours to get around. It stocks just about everything you can think of for the garden. It has a large playground for the kids to keep them entertained. We tried the restaurant out and I had the Beef Stroganoff and it wasn't too bad at all. The place is split between indoor and outdoor plants. Outside is a nice place to sit on the benches in the Summer. Unfortunately it's March and it's freezing out there at the moment.
Gordale is hands down the best garden center of the area. Vast selection of outdoor plants and indoors as well, with some nice succulents depending on the time of the year. It also has interesting house accessories from several selected brands plus kids toys. The deli has some unique finds in the free from section and I always get a ton of sugar free goodies for my diabetic hubby. The restaurant has good food, kids portions, high chairs and changing rooms. Breastfeed my little one here several times with no issues. In Xmas the centre is just magical, the Xmas villages are amazing. They have a singing penguin display that gives joy to everyone and a Santa's grotto.
Sep'24 Beautiful display of Autumn flora. Sandpit is still on as well. Oct'23 Incredible place with planty activities for kids of all ages throughout the whole year. Sandpit and Easter, Halloween hunts are my kids favourite.
Numerous varieties of plants at reasonably prices, well laid out, with plenty of signage. Good café too.
Has a great selection of Elho recycled plastic pots and propagation protection. Has a great range of the ocean recovered plastic pots enabling you to find the ones you find most striking rather than getting pot luck from online purchase.
There are loads of positives about Gordale. The fuel is the cheapest around bar Costco, but it is still close. The staff are just fabulous and so helpful. The goods on offer are quality and will help to lift your home and/or garden. Yes, there are expensive items here, but they are competitive and will often offer free delivery. The cafe is very nice too, although I do think the layout could do with a reconsider. Overall, I love it!!!
We really like Gordale. Loads of quality stuff, ideal if you're looking for a present. The best thing in the restaurant is the scones. Main meals are often only warm, rather than hot, and the most popular items often disappear quite quickly.
Fabulous garden centre, the staff are super helpful and very knowledgeable about plants. Plants are looked after well and cared for. 5
