They make some really good fresh cream cake. But the regular iced cakes are a disappointment. The decorations and designs of the cake are great. But the fondant and icing is way too sweet to even digest. I ordered a cake for my b'day yesterday and I can't even go anywhere near it. Fondant is sweet as always added to the icing that tastes like chugging a whole box of sugar. Had to take of all the icing off before eating. Sweetest thing I've ever tasted. Took one bite and it's making me feel sickly; same reaction I got from the other people who ate the cake :( truly disappointed. I always order cake from this bakery but it was a total disappointment. Don't think I would want to buy another cake from here.

I am extremely disappointed with the round chocolate cake I purchased from Gardners Bakery for my 21st birthday. And even more appalled with the customer service… I was a first time customer with Gardners Bakery and read many positive reviews online so I was super excited to see and taste their work. And what better way to experience it than on my birthday?! When I collected my cake (14th June) a day before my birthday I thought it looked nicely decorated and inviting. Although the decorations looked good, once I got home I realised that not all the decorations followed my requirements. Some were completely different from what I had asked for however I didn't kick up a fuss. The cake looked good enough and I was excited to get stuck in on my birthday. When I cut the first slice on the day I noticed straight away how terribly dry the sponge looked. And then tasting it confirmed what I already knew from just looking at it! The sponge was awfully dry. No moisture whatsoever. Dry as a bone - I might as well had been eating cardboard! It was the driest cake I have ever tasted! To top things off it didn't even taste like chocolate. The sponge was flavourless and tasted very synthetic like it was made from a cake mix rather than from fresh ingredients which is what you would expect from a 'bakery'. I called up the shop on the 16th June (a day after my birthday) to inform them of my concerns. I was told to bring in the cake for inspection. I brought the cake into the shop the same day as I called up. I was approached by a woman named Helen and a young female assistant who I explained my concerns to. Both workers stood there cutting up the cake and trying it multiple times before abruptly telling me that it wasn't dry at all. Helen spoke to me in an aggressive tone which I found very intimidating. I was completely astounded by the behaviour of both workers. It quickly became apparent that this business does not value their customers one bit. Helen was adamant that it was down to personal preference why I didn't like the cake however I explained to her that many others at my party shared the same thoughts as mine. Furthermore I brought up the point that since trying the cake I had found a review online that spoke of their chocolate cake being dry and tasteless. Helen began to raise her voice and fling her hands all over the place whilst telling me that there was only ONE bad review online and that the man who brought the cake in was in the wrong because he should have brought it into the shop sooner. There seemed to be a pattern occurring here... Yet again someone else was to blame and not the business! She told me to get in contact with her if I found another bad review other than that one. I thought that this was a pointless thing to say. What was she planning on doing if I showed her another bad review? She wasn't taking mine or the previous customer’s concerns seriously so why would it matter if another customer complained?! In her eyes they would also be in the wrong too, right? It must have taken a good 30 minutes of going back and forth in conversation and cake testing from both women before Helen issued a full refund. Just to note a couple of things - I did not receive a single apology for the terrible experience ruining my 21st birthday. Oh and the only reason I received a full refund was because of my 'big following' on social media, as Helen mentioned just before she issued my refund. I had previously communicated with Gardners Bakery over on Twitter regarding my order therefore Helen was aware of my social following. I didn't receive a refund because the workers were genuinely apologetic for my terrible experience. Oh no. I received my full refund of £41.25 because they were scared that I would share my terrible experience on social media to my 'big following' and the business might lose out on potential customers. How utterly sly and selfish?! STAY CLEAR OF GARDNERS BAKERY! Ps. 'All comments subject to approval' might just explain why they've got so many good reviews on their website.
