We had a great experience with FCF. We ordered a bed frame and it was created in the timeline outlined on the website. It arrived with a roadside pallet delivery as outlined on the website, and whilst heavy to get up to the third floor, it was really worth it! Previous reviews had made us nervous, but for absolutely no need. Yes there are occasional cracks in the wood, but only in the way you’d expect to see cracks in the beams of an old house. It’s part of the charm. For a more uniformed piece of furniture it’s probably safer to go to a chain store, but for something rustic and unique, we’re very pleased!
Ordered a mantel beam, when it came I was very surprised the quality was so poor. Lots of circular scratches showing the machining which hadn’t been sanded, the finish was missing in two places looking odd at the front, the very large split in the front came from the screws in the holding bracket, the multiple splits were full of a thick white paste and there was a loose flap of wood at the front which was sharp. I sent pictures about the mantel but they say this is part of the “rustic” look. I am unsure how it’s rustic when the split has large chucks of white paste in it. I was then told I would have to sort the return myself which I would expect if the product was of good quality and I had changed my mind, unfortunately this was not the case but they took zero responsibility for a poor quality product.
Chopwell Tall Coffee Table with Storage / Medium Oak Second time ordering from Funky Chunky Furniture, and it is definitely our last. Previously we ordered a 6"x4" oak mantel shelf, which can be seen in one of the photos, and was surprised by the amount of warping that occurred to the piece whilst being left to climatise for over 2 months. We gave them the benefit of the doubt, and ordered a Chopwell Tall Coffee Table with storage, which we loved the look of. Instantly, after unpacking the table, we noticed the top face of the coffee table wasn't level, and attempted to position a vase in several places, finding it to be unstable in most. I used a spirit level to gauge how bad the top face was, and the photo speaks for itself. I contacted them expressing our displeasure, and the customer service we received was of the same quality as the table, s***! Despite highlighting to them numerous times that the top face isn't fit for purpose, as how can you place anything on that surface safely with its purpose of being a coffee table ??, the reply I consistently received was with our timber "you can expect to find splits, cracks, knots, shakes, waney edges, bows and twists", a phrase which they seem to use as their get out of jail free card for the poor process with how they store and machine their timber. I even asked if we returned just the top face could a new piece be sent out, to which, as a surprise, the answer was no. As Funky Chunky Furniture do not offer free returns, you have to arrange returns yourself, in which they suggest using Parcel Monkey or Parcel2Go. After packaging the table up using the packaging it came in, bubble wrap and shrink wrap, due to the weight and size of the packages the couriers say the parcel should be packed in cardboard, and that they won't take blame if the parcel is damaged in transit. This then puts doubt in your mind as what you should do, but in my opinion if Funky Chunky Furniture can't be bothered to package their goods properly, then why should I! £33.66 out of pocket later, the table has been returned and the saga is over. We will not be purchasing from them again, and I suggest you don't either.
Really disappointed with our order and now what seems to be a generic response to most people. Our shelves arrived but have a large amount of excessive machine/milling marks all over. No images on any 1 of the advertised shelves, mantles or any furniture show anything near the amount of machine markings. Emailed customer services and just no attempt to even rectify the situation. Only option is to send them back at my expense and then wait for a refund to be processed. We are not bothered that the shelves have knots, splits or machine marks. But the amount of machine marks is no way near anything advertised and they look like they have been kicked round a work shop, some stain thrown on them and shipped out the door. Would definitely not recommend.
Oak mantle beam arrived well packaged, however that's probably the only good thing. I appreciate it's a piece of wood but It arrived with large cracks/splits in, one of which I do not think will be repaired, and definitely isn't character, it goes 3/4 the way through the piece! so liable to split soon. Second issue is the supplied instructions state for this mantel it should use teardrop fixings and long lag bolts, neither of which were supplied. For a 150mm wide mantel I received 4 x 40mm bolts which are not adequate to support the beam. Third issue is I contacted them via phone and email and initially the response was ok and I was told to wait for an email reply later that day. I did, and what i received was regurgitated instructions saying I need to use the supplied 18cm long fixings i never received any! I tried calling at 5 different times within their phone line opening window between 9-11am and no answer! Another issue is the white oak stain is actually really patchy and somewhat unfinished, I can fix this myself but not what was expected. I'm probably going to have to have a trip to screwfix to find some fixing myself which will work for my item. FYI the lady on the phone who friendly enough, had said under her breath that there are 100s of customer issues, so I'm likely not alone. Quality of product - OK Overpriced and unfinished Customer service - Really poor! Can’t even get the fix right and didn’t send enough of the fixing they sent 1! Must be a joke! Lead Time - OK Granted I ordered over xmas so may have been a backlog Fixings - Poor Wrong type supplied, if tried to use the supplied ones it would be unsafe! Having to search stores to find something myself
I am a property developer and have ordered four beams this year from this company. The first three have been of suitable quality for use hence why I continued to order from them however the last one received last week was covered in splits and cracks and totally unsuitable for use. I contacted the company, naively, thinking they would be willing to help and send a replacement. Chris couldn't care less and proceeded to advise that splits and cracks are just a 'normal' characteristic and a replacement would not be sent on the basis that it would likely be the same. This was despite me sending pictures of the three previous beams I have received which showed the clear difference in quality. Chris was extremely unhelpful. I am now left with a beam that is only good for firewood. Terrible customer service. No regard for repeat custom. S*** product.
Haven’t finished decorating yet but absolutely love the difference this has made to my livingroom!! It finishes of my tv wall perfectly. Great product, very heavy and sturdy, very well made. Will definitely be recommending this company to others and will also be using again for myself, can’t wait to see what other products I can buy.
Bought a bed and two bedside tables from them. Overall quality is ok but there’s a clear lack of attention to detail. Also the lead time is really long, so adds to the disappointment when they don’t arrive in good condition. The bed frame was fine, really beautiful, but had missing screws, measurements were slightly off so you end up with little gaps here and there, just don’t expect it to fit like mass manufactured furniture. One of the bedside tables arrived damaged, drawer wouldn’t open and the drawer base is damaged, dowels are not knocked in properly and are exposed, corner of the leg chipped off and polished down in attempt to hide the defect. The other one just has a crack all the way across the table top and dowels not knocked in properly again. The crack they might get away with calling it rustic, but the problem is when the loose wood in the crack comes off the wood underneath will get damaged. I’m waiting to see if they will replace the items. Even if they do, having to repack it and wait for replacements is not a great experience. I’m disappointed in their lack of quality assurance as reading from other people’s reviews many complained about similar issues as well so doesn’t look like this is a one off. One thing I can say they improved on is the packaging, the tables came with cardboard protected corners this time, the first time I ordered from them it was only bubble wrap. Edit: Replacements were sent and received within 2 weeks. Replacements are working and properly assembled. Added photo of finished result of bed frame and bedside tables.
Based on my experience, I strongly advise avoiding Funky Chunky completely. To cut a long story short, I bought two bedside tables in late-October 2022. The items arrived on 17 January 2023, around 14 weeks after purchase already a very long lead time. The tables were in a terrible state of repair. As seen in the photos below, the legs were almost severed in half and there were numerous chips and scuffs. The damage was almost certainly caused during transit. Both tables were packaged totally inadequately, with only a few layers of bubble wrap around the items. The table legs and corners were jutting out of the bubble wrap and were therefore totally exposed to damage see photos below. As you would expect, Funky Chunky offered to send replacement items out. Frustratingly, they would not expedite the order at all, meaning a similar lead time. The replacements did not arrive until 10 March 2023 another 8 weeks. To my amazement, the replacement items were packaged just the same. A few layers of bubble wrap with legs exposed. While the damage was not as bad the second time, there were again several chips and scuffs to the table top and legs. Funky Chunky suggested that the damage could be sorted by using a wax repair kit they had sent out. They refused to offer any compensation. They offered to send more replacements, but no guarantee these would be delivered quickly. The only gesture of goodwill was a small percentage off a future purchase which unsurprisingly I do not want to accept. I think I am quite a fair reviewer. For me, the mark of a good company is not necessarily getting it right the first time, but rather how a company makes amends for a mistake. But Funky Chunky have got it wrong twice now, over a period of 5 months, and not offered any sort of compensation for the inconvenience and stress caused. Even writing this review takes time, let alone the emails, rearranging delivery, repacking the damaged items, and living without suitable furniture for months. My advice to avoid this company is also based on similar reviews. If you scroll down, you will almost certainly find very similar stories about damaged goods and inappropriate packaging, and the company refusing to take responsibility. Don't get me wrong, Funky Chunky design some beautiful furniture that really fills a niche in the UK market. So I can really see the temptation to buy from them. But please heed this warning!
Lovely oak mantle shelf delivered on time and just the colour we wanted. It's well finished to the correct size with good quality fixings. The only reason for not giving a 5 star review is because I have not yet installed it as I'm waiting for the wall to be plastered and the wood to acclimatise as I do not want it to twist or warp. Can recommend this company and this product.
