We walk from braintree to Rayne and back again once a week. Me and My 4 children 12,7,4,1 we stop at Rayne cafe for some lunch then go to the local park then we take a wander home. Safe way to get kids from one place to another. To be able to ride their bikes or scooter or just walk. It's a great day and plenty of exercise Playground: There is Rayne park. You come off at rhe red bridge that goes over the flitch way. Its a lovely playground with plenty to do, great fun for all ages. My 12 year old goes on the ramps and others are all at the park. Restrooms: Restrooms both at Rayne train station cafe and at Rayne Park. Both are kept clean and looked after well. Can't complain Dog-friendliness: We see many different dogs on route as is a great place to let them run free the same as the children Picnic area: We always stop at Rayne Cafe. I sometimes take a little bit of a packed lunch for the littlies food allergies although the cafe do cater well for allergies also there are benches at the Park you can use for a picnic
Always well managed from Braintree to Rayne where The Booking Hall Cafe is. Best mid morning on a damp spring day when you have it almost to yourself.
love love love this route...spring, summer autumn... haven't tried the winter yet, but expect I'll love it just the same
A wonderful stretch of cyclepath and footway that stretches from Braintree railway station to Bishops Stortford. Forming part of National Cycle Network route 16, it stretches along the old railway line for 15 miles. It is maintained by Essex County Council Rangers and the Friends of the Flitch Way - a group of local volunteers who have helped to restore the habitats along the way. The Friends website is a treasure trove of historical information and pointers to the wildlife you can see along the way. It is an easy cycle, being almost entirely flat and along mostly cinder track. There are a couple of breaks where bridges have been dismantled or are no longer safe but signposting is generally good. The only part where you may need a map is in Dunmow itself where you need to follow local roads through the town centre to pick up the old railway track again on the north west side of the town. Well worth walking, cycling or riding as much of it as you can, whatever time of year. As you leave the old railway line around Dunmow, you cycle under the A120 which has been turned into an amazing graffiti art studio and skate park.
A great place to cycle or walk with the family away from any traffic. Plus there is a lovely cafe at Rayne that does lovely food and drinks. Well worth a visit!
Great walk through the Forrest. Great for dog walks. There is a train and cake shop at the station.
Loving this place so much I'll be back.
The Flitch Way runs for 15 miles from Braintree railway station to Bishops Stortford. You can walk it or cycle it. It is a wonderful example of the reuse of railway tracks closed down by the Beeching cuts started in 1963. The whole length of this old railway track is now a remarkable wild life haven in the heart of North Essex. I have cycled the full length a number of times there and back and every time I find something new of interest. Walking is a different matter 30 miles is too far for me. So I do a section section say from Rayne to Braintree or Rayne to Great Dunmow. Which is 6 and 8 miles respectively both way. Whichever way you explore The Flitch Way l am sure you will find it a gem of a place in the Essex country side
