Beautiful ruins located where river Dee joins the sea. Mostly outside curtain walls and corner towers survived in quite good shape. It's possible to get on the top of one of the towers and get down to I believe once it was a dungeon in the other. Great castle to explore especially for kids. Free parking and free entry. The views from the top of the tower are great. Be mindful there are gates on the entrance and they do lock the place up about 4pm everyday so if you turn up after this you won't be getting inside!

Kids and dog loved the explore, grounds and castle itself well managed/kept. Shame the tallest tower was locked as was looking forward to the views, this along with lack of toilets was the only things to let the place down otherwise would have been 5 Would definitely recommend and would most probably visit again.

Located in a local park, with Free parking at time of posting, You can climb the tower and look out over the coast and local area, Lots of Information Boards and space for a picnic, although a local cafe is a stone's throw away. Well worth a visit especially if your on your way home from North Wales and want somewhere interesting to visit along the way.

An amazing place to visit. We went for a little day trip from Cheshire, it was such an impressive castle ruins. It was very quiet when we went on a Thursday. We easily parked, sat at the picnic tables overlooking the castle and River Dee with a cuppa from the little food truck in the car park, then went for a walk around the ruins. We went up the turret which had great views from the top and was relatively easy to ascend. We will be returning and would like to go for a longer walk around the surrounding park looking area. Just note that it is a very open area with no shelter so make sure you have a coat and umbrella if it's looking like rain.
It was a shame that when we were there, during the day with a small child there was the school louts congregated and smoking weed there which really let it down but that aside its an Interesting castle to have a look round and explore. You can climb the spiral tower to see stunning views over the estuary or the lights of the city to the other side.
Stopped off at the castle on our way through.. a little gem nicely cared for . Loved the views from the top and the history lesson from the talking post .. All in all worth a visit if you're in the area , free to look around and a safe stair case to the top.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
