Completed a competent crew course over one weekend. This was my first real introduction to sailing so finding the right training school was very important to me. I couldn’t have picked a better environment to begin my sailing journey. Ashley, our instructor had an impressive wealth of knowledge and let us all have a significant amount of hands on time which was incredible. A truly unforgettable experience. Thank you to all those involved.
Wonderful experience from start to finish, and as someone who has been away from the water for many years, the complete package was brilliant from start to finish, from the initial inquiry to achieving my goal of day skipper! Everyone in the office is so helpful, and I have to thank Sam for all her guidance and advice before booking. Josh on the water was truly a star, patient, kind, immensely knowledgable, and always encouraging and supportive. He made the whole experience not only fun but also gave me the confidence to charter a boat on my own, which is invaluable and a skill I never thought I could master. I would recommend the one-on-one buying the whole boat, which makes it even more enjoyable and also flattens off the learning curve as there is no waiting for others -so thoroughly recommend it - it's one of the reasons I went with First Class Sailing. I also recommended the split weekends, as it gives you time to study and build on the knowledge before putting it into practice the following weekend. First Class are ......well just First Class - what more can I say!! David
Competent Crew Course completed. Had an absolute blast on this course being skippered by Andy. Really took time to connect with everyone and build the crew morale. The weather to a novice was pretty rough in the leadup to Storm Eunice, but Andy was a complete pro at all times and even made his novice crew feel like being part of the decision process of where to go, blending the adverse weather conditions in as part of the course. I can't talk highly enough of him as the instructor and hope I get Andy on all future courses with First Class. 10 out of 5 for instruction, enjoyment, the boat, the food, the giggles and the lessons.
Bavaria 46, £4500 for the whole boat, Competent Crew course in July. It was my first sailing experience and my expectations were exceeded. FCS had sent instructions in advance, decent level of organisation, and I had full support from the company, thanks Martin, and the team! Ross is an excellent instructor and shared a lot of knowledge with us. He sparked my curiosity to take the next Day Skipper course! Looking forward to it!
I wanted to highlight the excellent experience last weekend on the Heavy Weather Course in partnership with the Tall Ships team. John was an outstanding skipper and probably the best I’ve sailed with - in my modest/medium experience. His personal style, knowledge and patience really made the three days work. The mate and watch leaders were pretty good as well! It was very clear that this group have the superior interpersonal skills to work with a range of customers and coach them through the necessary routines for Challenger. Personally I thought the yacht itself and facilities were great. I liked to pipe cot sleeping arrangements but that may not be a universal attitude! The always fickle weather worked in our favour with F9 conditions outside of the Solent on Friday. Neither FCS or TS can take credit for that! The only observation I would make is that i didn’t appreciate that there would be so much theory - not a criticism but more a communication thing.
I needed to organise specific date requests for 2 groups of 3 friends to train on a mix of competent crew, day skipper and coastal skipper courses. First Class Sailing were indeed first class in terms of their response to accommodate the request and delivery of the instruction. Both groups took sole use of the Dufour 40 yacht eVent which was a great vessel to train on. I myself was part of the first group to spend 5 days aboard training to Day Skipper with skipper Keith Miller. Keith was an excellent trainer, his teaching style really boosted my confidence and ability. His knowledge and great experience provided a very inclusive and positive boat environment. The boat was well provisioned - especially for these Brits living abroad to have some favourite foods turn up. Also the essential wet weather gear that was provided was very good quality. Thanks to all at First Class Sailing - we left with great memories and the qualifications we were aiming for - a happy crew!
The First Class sailing school team lives up to its name: they are first class professionals who run the school like a perfectly oiled machine. Very clear communications and timely instructions made the process of booking the course, setting it up and getting to the boat as easy and enjoyable as a walk in the park. I took part in a Cruising Instructor sail course led by instructor Rob and moderated by instructor Andy. They both make an amazing team that helped me a lot to understand the RYA pedagogical framework and its practical application in day-to-day nautical teaching. True and inspiring role models as teachers, Rob and Andy showed great patience and incredible communication skills even with someone whose first language is not English like me. Personally I would repeat the experience at any time without hesitation. The boat where the course took place deserves a special mention: the Cascadeur is a noble and highly reliable sailing vessel that is perfectly cared for. The meticulousness with which all the elements aboard are labeled, its equipment and distribution make the Cascadeur a perfect educational platform to enjoy, learn and gain sailing experience.
We had an amazing day. Crew did a great job and met our every need. We had 24 people on a team event and we all had a brilliant time, the boat was perfect for people to talk and get to know each other. Drinks flowed, lovely food and all around a great day! Will definitely hire the boat again. Thank you to all, all your hard work was greatly appreciated.
Completed my Competent Crew Course with Alex and David on the Gaff Rig Golden Vanity. It was an amazing experience and a good way to do Competent Crew if - like me - you've already got some experience on easier "plastic" cruisers, because there are five sails and they all need to be attached, raised and lowered the old way. The course was delivered in an informal but thorough way and I came home feeling I'd really achieved something.
Day Skipper Practical over two weekends. Excellent learning environment; measured, informative, but also challenging. Nigel was an excellent instructor. Will be back for more.
