Fife Ice Arena

Story

Fife Ice Arena opened in 1938. Kirkcaldy Ice Rink was designed by architects Williamson & Hubbard. Fife Ice Arena is the home venue of the oldest Ice Hockey team in the UK - the Fife Flyers. It is also a venue for public skating, figure skating, speed skating, curling and ice shows. The arena has also hosted concerts, boxing, wrestling, motorcycle ice speedway and other events such as dog shows. The Fife Free Press dated February 2, 1938, announced 30,000 ordinary shares at One Pound each in a proposed new rink in the town—25,000 shares were offered for subscription. On February 17, plans to build the rink in the Gallatown were presented to, and approved by, Kirkcaldy Dean of Guild Court. The one-storey building contained seating for 4,500 and would cost £37,000 to construct. To put that figure into context the town's fire station, also opened that year, cost £15,000.The building was to have a carcass of steel stanchions and a roof span of 145 feet without any supporting pillars except those at the extremities, making it the widest construction of its kind in Scotland at the time. The rink's ground level would consist of an entrance hall, general office, booking office, confectioners and tobacconist, cloakroom with provision for a large restaurant, and a milk bar. Facilities also included dressing rooms with spray baths, while immediately above the entrance was the boardroom, bandstand and manager's office. The plans also had a touch of class—the restaurant featured Parker-Knoll chairs, curtains designed by Dame Laura Knight, as well as monogrammed cutlery.

Fife Ice Arena is one of the oldest skating rinks still in use in the UK. With that in mind the facilities are dated in places but they are maintained and works seem to be ongoing to improve them. They will never seem shiny new but that's part of the charm. The atmosphere here on match night are unlike any other venue. There's a reason Fife Flyer are the oldest team in the UK, the arena is a great place to watch hockey. The arena also serves as a curling rink and hosts figure skating events and training. Skating lessons at the weekend are a well attended and highly held family friendly event also.
First visit to a hockey match, took grandchikdren 10 and 11 years old just to experience something new, they dont live locally. Their opinions - Fantastic, Great! Music played gave them interest when play stopped, plenty animation goings on. The actual play definitely had them focused cheering on the home team. Of course the inevitable chips and a drink were bought. Great service, friendly staff all round. Worth a visit even if not an ice hockey fan, think you will be be the end of the game.
Nice Rink looks really good and well done but The Fans are absolutely hopeless. They Fill out but are absolutely quiet. The Edinburgh Capitals last season had better crowds and they where shite.
Went to watch the flyers, good game. The arena is older but still does everything. The parking lot could be better. Overall a good experience.
Absolutely disgusting behaviour displayed by a man called Dave, i went in thinking it was a public skate as that was displayed on social media, however I left feeling humiliated and stupid after entering and getting extreme attitude for turning up and believing what was on the internet. I will never be returning after that disgusting experience, I hope they manage to replace dave with someone that will welcome customers.
It's an old school Ice rink so what's not to like. The food is great too.
Decent ice rink. However bumping prices up to £8 per session after covid even though the time on the rink has decreased is a bit disappointing. Toilets need cleaned more often. Staff are helpful
It's a decent arena, could do with some maintenance however the let down is that the fife fans sound like unfed animals locked in cages, not sure if they are like this because they're desperate for a win or if they just haven't eaten.
Dont care that some of the seats dont have much room, the people in Fife are lovely and their stovies shouldn't be missed. Drop a whiskey in your tea to keep you warm and you'll be right. See you again soon Fife.
Lear to skate session was really good
