This was brilliant, much better than expected, loads of good clear info and beautiful views! There’s a pathway that you can walk under the tunnel once you’re finished on the boat too. Plenty to keep the kids amused and the adults. Nice little cafe and gift shop, and for those with a sweet tooth, an ice cream stand too! They run 2 boats, perfect for wet weather too as the boats are covered. Highly recommended and lovely walks nearby along the canal paths.
Had been really looking forward to seeing this wheel in action & it didn't disappoint. A great engineering marvel. Can take a boat ride & experience the wheel in action. It's situated in a very nice area with a lovely walk around the area with plenty of seating to take in the views. A lovely gift shop & cafe. Can walk along the canal a few miles to reach the Kelpies.
Amazing! The technology and engineering that have gone into this design are awesome. Didn’t have time to book the boat tour, but did get to watch the wheel in operation. The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes. Just incredible to watch. The area has loads of parking. The complex is spotless with a lovely curio and coffee shop. There is loads of information on the history and design. Was one of the highlights of our trip. Would love to do the canal trip next time.
What a place... An amazing feat of engineering and has to be seen really. Lots of parking, you pay on the way out and lots of information in a very beautiful glass building We were passing through so didn't book the boat trip, but loved watching the whole process. We did eat in the restaurant, well coffee and cake and it was delicious, in fact all the food looked lovely. Everything is in the one building, which is great and it's been build with this glass sloping roof so that when you sit inside you can see the wheel at work. I also walked to the top to see the boat come out onto the top canal, it was fab, loved our visit here quite amazing piece of canal history
Fantastic engineering, the world's first and only rotating boat lift. Seeing it in action was superb and going on it was even better! Great views from the top, you can even see The Kelpies! Commentary and information given whilst on the canal boat was really good and informative. Lovely walking trails along the canal. Plenty of things for children to do, including a lovely play park. Great cafe, gift shop and toilets. Would highly recommend a visit!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. A completely unique, functional attraction and a feat of engineering. A tour on one of the boats is a great experience, taking approx 50min. Riding the boat around the wheel to the canal above, taking a short journey through the tunnel and returning to the start back along the canal and back down via the wheel. There’s also a host of other activities available for all ages and even if you don’t fancy paying for any of the activities, the wheel is impressive to observe and there’s nice walking opportunities along the canal. With the Kelpies not too far away, a trip incorporating both attractions would be time well spent.
If you like engineering and cake not such a niche subset I'd imagine then this is well worth a visit. There is a great cafe on site, ample parking and a tour of the wheel if you want to experience it in action. You can go right up to it for only the cost of the parking, which is nice. There is also a canal boat hire facility here if you want to take a longer trip.
I’m an engineer and was impressed with the vision, engineering and construction of this marvelous machine. The concepts and principles are simple and the result is magnificent. This elevator replaced 11 locks needed to pick the boats up 115 feet. Trips on the wheel up to the union canal and back leave every 45 minutes to an hour. I chose to walk the trip up the hill and through the tunnel. If you are lucky you can see a canal boat travers the locks also. Great shop and cafe. Great place to spent a few hours. Parking is £3.50 and is pretty close.
A fantastic show of engineering, we were too late however you are able to pay to go on the wheel and see it working. We were able to witness it in action and that alone is fabulous. Great place to go for an afternoon with family, they have play area, water park and boat pond; and a friendly cafe I side
Great to watch the boats and barges rotate on this amazing piece of engineering. Plenty different angles to eat h it from.. Plenty of activities for kids are there is a large play park on site too. Toilets FREE are within the visitors centre as is a cafe and shop with plenty of souvenirs and information boards giving you a insight into the wheel. Parking is £3.50 for the day but don't lose your ticket as it costs £15!!!
