Incredible place and atmosphere. Clearly still a significant site for many people with pilgrimage to this site evident in and out of the barrow. The walk from Avebury to this site was nothing other than breathtaking. My imagination was lit up by this place and its history. it is a very well preserved site and you can freely explore the barrow. There was a pleasant aroma on entering which I was taken aback by. It must have been left over from a previous visitor who was using some incense, this invoked images of how similar scents might have been present in the past. Will definitely visit again
Not sure where you are supposed to approach this site from? We luckily visited just before sunset and parked at the corner of a farmers field, which is surely not the done thing usually. Really impressive site, it's great to be able to enter the chamber and imagine what this was used for. Still blows my mind how they engineered this stuff with primitive tools at their disposal.
We decided along with 100 other people, ha that a short stroll up would be a nice thing to do on a sunny and windy midweek afternoon. We’ve visited a few times, it’s obviously heavily restored, but the access is clearly defined, the views lovely, and the information board helpful in imagining and understanding the importance of a site, which was used as a tomb for 36 people, yet visited actively over 1,000 years and now visited by many again a few thousand years later!
Visited here on a circular walk which takes in Silbury Hill, the long barrow and the stones at Avebury and it's impressive. The best bit is being able to go into the underground chamber which was bigger than I expected.
Parking lay-by off the side of main road. Walk through kissing gate and over bridge. Need to walk up the slope to reach the long barrow itself. Land either side of the main pathway and around the barrow is farmland so need to be respectful of crops etc. Most recent visit just before summer solstice wasn't too busy. There were swifts nesting inside the barrow and wildflowers covering the mound. Great place to sit, have breakfast and look out towards Silbury Hill and towards Calne.
Finally able to park! We have passed dozens of times without finding a space. Walked up through a field of skittish heifers at the start of a gale. Well worth turning round to admire Silbury Hill as you can just about see it with no road interrupting the view if you stand in the right place. The long barrow is partly accessible inside but not for the full length. You can walk along the top too, though when we went the wind was too strong to enjoy that. No rubbish, graffiti or interpretive signs. Just us and the stones. Perfect if you like that sort of thing. Will go again next time I can park.
An interesring place near to Avebury, which is also worth a visit. It's an ancient burial mound, which overlooks Silbury Hill. You park in the allocated parking space by the roadside and take a 10 minute walk with a slight incline to the destination.
Fabulous place, a long barrow that you can actually go into. Part of the way at least. You can see the various chambers where Neolithic people left the remains of the dead. Nice view across to Silbury Hill too
Never expected to see such a cave complex used to bury the dead over 3200 BC! Looks like there is more to excavate. We came across a strage tree! It was hollow, but was growing like a normal tree! Modern day druids still tye ribbons in the beaches of these trees.
Peaceful inside even when stormy outside beautiful to visit no matter the weather but steep uphill so winds do get strong but it’s worth it -free to seeVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
