A real gem. Interesting tour of the castle, which provided welcome cool spaces on a very hot day! Good value even if not a member of English Heritage. Lovely tea room too, and best of all it had its own beach - which was very quiet with sparkling clean, shallow water. Dogs welcome everywhere, happy days. Well worth a visit!
4 miles from Weymouth, Portland Castle is easily accessible by bus. Built as a fort during the reign of Henry VIII to protect against the invasion, the castle has a gun platform with beautiful views of the sea and the Portland harbour. The castle has a fan shape form that adds a distinguished note to it. The English Heritage keeps it well preserved and the entrance is free, if you are a member. The free audio tour is very useful to understand the history of the castle. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The cafe is a nice place to relax and have something to eat before exploring the castle. I definitely recommend it.
Brilliant way to spend a few hours. English heritage have done a great job of preserving this fort and telling its story of how strategically important it has been over the centuries. The lady in the shop was particularly pleasant and gave advice on additional places to visit on Portland and how to get to them.
Nice little castle owned by English heritage. Small car park adjacent free to members and £3 to paying guests. Dogs welcome on a lead. Cafe, toilets and shop onsite. Picnic benches and plenty of places to sit. Lovely views over the water.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure

Went in 99 so forgotten most of what I saw. From the car park it didn't look post medieval, almost like Barratts had built it. Almost a modern fort. Well worth the visit. Great to choose an attraction with a roof given today's weather. You get a free audio tour, you just have to tap it on the gizmo on the information boards and you hear all you need to know. The apple cake in the cafe was scrummy.
Interesting little castle built by Henry VIII. Nice interactive set telling you everything about certain areas of the castle as you wander around. Fantastic views of the harbour - as you would expect from a defensive castle! Super friendly staff as well.
Lovely little castle. Doesn't look much from outside but surprisingly bigger than it appears once inside. Worth a visit if you enjoy heritage buildings.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Portland Castle is worth a 30 minute wander, since even though it's on the smaller end of coastal castles and mostly empty inside, it has interesting signage, an audio tour, and good views to enjoy. The informative signs give info about the castle's history, use of rooms, and some small kids activities. There is not a specific tour route, but easy to wander around. Floors throughout are more even than most castles due to wooden floors they've put in, and has a bigger spiral staircase. Tea room is small but functional - perhaps 8 tables, and a small selection of snacks, beverages, and lunch options. Parking Is £3 non-members, can get full at busy times. Card or coin accepted by machine Toilets ok - dated but clean.
Great little trio of castles commissioned by Henry VIII. Have now visited Portland, Hurst and Calshot castles that were built to protect our waters on the south coast. There is a free audio tour at Portland Castle that is well worth listening to. It's owned by English Heritage so there will be an entry charge for non members.
