Excellent castle to walk around. Unusual that much of the expansive wards of the original site are still protected. Good information boards dotted around to explain each phase of construction and contraction over the centuries. Although a lot of the stonework has been robbed out it doesn't detract due to the scale of the site. Relatively flat and lots of grass areas, it's family friendly and dog on lead friendly. Staff are on site to answer questions and there is a small shop.
Dramatic castle ruins in an imposing situation overlooking the river Tees. Lots of information boards to read on the way around the site, detailing the castle's history. Fewer facilities than many big English Heritage sites, but not a problem as there's no shortage of cafés etc in town. Booked in advance to be sure to get in, but didn't actually seem too busy, even on a weekend in July. Dog friendly.
Interesting castle with a reasonable amount of information boards around. Dramatic location, perched on an escarpment above the river. A bit more info eg audio tour would have been good. Doesn't have its own car park and parking in town can be difficult at peak times. Enjoyed it, would go againVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A peaceful walk through history. Wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. The reception area is occupied by helpful and friendly staff, also very clean toilet facilities and picnic area. No parking at the Castle although many spaces in the town centre clearly sign posted.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+
Really cool ruins. Not much in the way of artifacts or features, but still fascinating to wander around and imagine life in the castle. Run by English Heritage, which I joined recently so a win there. Nice views also of the surrounding town which is very nice.
Lovely rustic market town with Castle and churches. Plenty of dining areas on main high street and usual shops. Just next to the river with some beautiful walks. Definitely well worth a visit if you get the chance.
Best place especially with kids, not a long hike even if you choose long route. The only difference is long route will take you up where the falls starts and will complete the loop back to starting point and short hike will take straight to where the falls fall so both are good for photos.Visited onWeekdayWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNo
Great castle ruin towering above the river tee's. Fantastic views to be had on the rampants. Has a small gift shop at the entrance with helpful and friendly staff. Plenty of information boards dotted around to help you imagine what it would have looked like. The site is run by english heritage, who are doing a great job preserving what is left of the castle. We spent about an hour here in total and there was no parking.
We visited in cool, rainy conditions but still enjoyed our visit. The staff were friendly and the information boards dotted around the site were very informative. There was quite a lot to see spread over quite a big site. The long, bridge has a wooden surface and chicken wire has been put underfoot to prevent slipping. There are a few areas of wear however so be aware of where you place your feet. The view down over the river is very pleasant.
Great place to visit, lots of lovely independent shops, loads of antique shops and plenty of general high Street known shops. Great bakery 'Rise'. Lovely country and River side walks around. Free parking on the main streets.
