Embassy of the People's Republic of China

Story

The Embassy of China in London is the diplomatic mission of China in the United Kingdom. The Embassy in London is China's only embassy in the UK, alongside two Consulates-General in Edinburgh and Manchester. Established in 1877 as the Chinese Legation, the London mission was China's first permanent overseas diplomatic mission. It has served as the diplomatic mission of the Qing Empire, Republic of China and (since 1950) the People's Republic of China. It was the location of the Qing Empire's detention of Sun Yat-sen, an important episode in the Chinese revolution of 1911. It remains today the focal point for events relating to China held in the United Kingdom, including celebrations in 2012 to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and the People's Republic of China. Most applications by UK citizens for visas to China are not handled by the embassy, however, but are instead processed by the China Visa Applications Centre, also located in London. There is a constant police presence outside the embassy.China also maintains several other buildings in London: a Defence Section at 25 Lyndhurst Road, Hampstead, a Commercial Section at 16 Lancaster Gate, Paddington, a Cultural Section at 11 West Heath Road, Hampstead and a Science & Technology Section at 10 Greville Place, Maida Vale.

I'd give minus -1 stars if Google could allow it. The service is absolutely shocking, the website is terrible, the staff are rude. My aunt had to renew her Chinese passport, so she filled out the form per usual. Coming from Birmingham, we took the train down to London, got to the embassy and we're told by the lady we have to book an appointment through the website, and come back on a later day. TIME WASTED, TRAIN MONEY WASTED. Where on the website does it say you have to book an appointment? Where is the link? Where is the section on passport renewal? I feel more sorry for the elderly in the same queue who also got rejected, as they probably don't know how to book using a PC.

I recently visited the Embassy. The staff at the counter was friendly and fast. But the embassy does need improvements: the waiting time was long compare to the amount of people who were waiting there; No receptionist at the door – well, there was a guy but guess he also works as the only security outside the entrance. So each one who walked in looked completed lost. The ticket machine is partially hidden by the “security gate” so once you pass the security gate you won’t find it unless you look back; The staffs who were walking around behind the counter looked slow & tired. The website is CONFUSING! The information regarding “Visa”, “Passport” aren’t obvious/clear enough, and for sure they are not up-to-date. For example: the instructions for pass port renew was lasted updated in 2015. So many people complaint they never know an appointment was needed to renew the passport until they are at the embassy; And some link on the embassy website will take you to another funny website with video clips that look like movie. The downstairs room for picking up the documents reminds me of a busy & un-organized A&E in the hospital.

We went there - the basement level - to apply a travel document (travel permit?) for my child. Both experiences - submitting and collecting - were very positive. Everyone - from the security guard to the young lady who checked the applicants' documents, to the staff behind window - yes EVERYONE was polite, helpful and professional. Yes the wait was long but in my opinion that was due to the complexity of some cases, mine included. Just make sure that you follow the procedure, book online first and bring all the documents required.

As a Chinese citizen, I usually have some expect to our embassy but unfortunately the service standard is disappointing compared with other embassies in London such as Japan. The reception service is required to improve significantly and the security check is just seems like nothing, which does not give people a good impression. Actually many other staff are very helpful. However, they do need to improve the environment for the consular service room at ground floor and do better update and maintenance of their website. Some information is out-of-dated and the layout and design is not that clear in many cases. Their awareness of service is not enough. My suggestion is: if you are going to apply for a visa to China or any other applications, ask someone who know Chinese and explain all the information carefully so that your application preparation is secured!
