If you visit Ely, Cambridgeshire in the UK, you better stop here. This is stunningly beautiful in not only architecture, but in the artwork / statues. It was overwhelming to say the least. Be prepared to spend hours here as there is so much to see.nnWe paid for not just the Visitor tickets but also the Octagon Tower Tour. For both of them, it came to £50 only £28 if just the Visitor pass. We could have gotten some audio headset for our own walking tour, but didn’t do that. I do recommend them though to be more informed of what you are seeing.nnThe Octagon Tower Tour is not one for the unfit or afraid of heights. The stairs are narrow at some points and you are high up. You get to go outside twice at different heights for some stunning views. You actually get to see the angels at the top up close and look down at the cathedral from up high. We highly recommend it if you can schedule it when you visit.
This is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever seen, if not THE most beautiful. It was an unplanned stop, in October, on the way from Cambridge to King's Lynn and I'm so happy to have found such a gem. I will definitely come back for The Octagon Tower Tour.
The cathedral is spectacular. The included audio tour is very much designed for children, but it still gives great information for adults. The Stained Glass Museum is worth seeing if you have an interest in the art form, but be aware that you have to climb narrow and irregular stone stairs to get to it. A 1day pass for both Cathedral and Museum cost me £20 in 2024.
Entered for the annual Christmas market, but you really notice the building, which is spectacular!nnFantastic windows both stained glass and just leaded lights. The heating is pretty good considering the age of the cast iron radiators, now powered by gas rather than coal.nnThe organisation of the event is very good.
Ely cathedral towers over the surrounding city of Ely, making for some lovely pictures, even far away. Tickets to enter are supposedly £14, but we were neither asked, nor was there anywhere obvious to pay. The cathedral is a grand building inside, with beautiful stain glass windows throughout. If you come at the right time you can hear the choir rehearsing.nnIt is also dog friendly, allowing you to walk your dog throughout the main building. There are toilets for the public inside as well as a gift shop.
