This is my third year and counting staying in the Saltbox shepherd’s hut at Elmley. It is always a delight in every weather type because the landscapes that open up from the hut are gorgeous. We also eat at the farmhouse and there are always vegan & vegetarian options to accommodate my partner and I. Doing the wildlife dusk or dawn tours with Abbie are a must as she shares her deep well of knowledge about the local area, birds, and conservation! We managed to see several owls on our tour and it is a delight every year. The place is just a short train journey away from London and reasonably priced as a weekend retreat in nature!
Beautiful, restful spot. We stayed in a room in the main house. Really beautiful decor. Extremely comfortable and very clean. The food is excellent, loaded with local produce. Serene location, overlooking the nature reserve. A great escape less than two hours out of london.
We were a group of 14, so we had the cottage a room in the hotel and a shepherd's hut. We had a fantastic weekend. The cottage was perfect for our group to entertain ourselves with lovely big space downstairs. We had the Saturday night meal delivered to us, and it was excellent. The shepherd's hut was very small. My daughter and her husband with a 1 year old, so we had the 1 year old in the cottage with us. Overall a weekend to remember. The staff are very pleasant and helpful.
I'm a wedding photographer and had been very keen to photograph a wedding here - it just always looked so magical. I have to say it didn't disappoint. From the beautiful farmhouse where Abigail the bride got ready and the little Bungalow that's also available was really stylish too, which i wasn't expecting! which is a gorgeous mix of modern and chic, eclectic country; to the rustic barn for the reception and the truly gorgeous sunsets. There are so many spots you could potentially use for couple photos - acres of track and grass and sky. One of my stand out memories was coming back from golden hour photos with the couple and seeing the most beautiful starling murmuration, and watching lots of the guests watching them through the picture window at the back of the barn.
So in love with this place! Stayed in the saltbox for two nights. The best part is waking up to the most amazing view every morning. Had hampers delivered to our hut, the food was incredible! All the staff we dealt with go above and beyond, well done team Elmley! Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Stunning sweeping skies and whistling winds as we walked the flat, fabulous fenlike path. Saw a hare! Delicious carrot cake and good coffee at the cafe but be warned it closes at 3pm so if you've an afternoon walk planned be sure to be back in time or pop in before you go. It seemed to have lovely soups etc too but didn't try them.
Absolutely one of the most beautiful wedding venues I’ve ever worked at! The surrounding landscape, the cottage and accommodation for guests and the incredible barn space is totally spectacular and the team who run the venue were fantastic which is so important.Visited onWeekend
We stayed at Elmley for 2 nights, and the rooms at the farmhouse are beautiful, well sized and really feel luxurious. The views over the reserve are brilliant and the food for supper was very tasty, We noticed multiple people looking for someone to show them in/check them in on arrival, ourselves included as multiple times there was no-one around - which does add to the feeling of the house being less a hotel, but it really wasn't obvious who to ask for advice on the walks or where to go for breakfast. The breakfast offering is small a croissant and yoghurt/granola when we asked for some toast the waitress looked quite surprised and it was a little awkward - we were then charged £6 for 2 pieces of bread which is pretty shocking given the price of the rooms and surprising there isn't more on offer. If you want extra you must pay £8 + for 2 eggs on some spinach - it's not adequate, given the small lunch offering. Fiona was a fantastic tour guide for the dusk walk, she had so much information and took care of us really well. We bought our own binoculars but were very surprised to hear they will charge you £5/day if you don't bring any - this should really be included, again given the cost of the stay. Overall a good stay but there are some tweaks and learnings Elmley could take away - given a lot of people say similar in reviews. I agree with a lot of reviews that for the price you pay for the rooms you need to get much more of a premium experience and offering.
This review is for my visit to the Elmley National Nature Reserve-Day visit. Great trip, £6 per head there was 2 of us. Nice carpark, the toilet was nice and decent. It was a nice walk, we walked for 4 hours, saw lots of birds and farm animals. Great experience.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
