Visiting friends nearby they suggested a walk to this castle ruins. It must of been quite a sight in its full glory back in the 1100’s, very impressive walls with Herringbone stone laying and a massive entry tower that may have had a draw bridge. Their are plenty of signboards around the grounds that give information about the castle as plenty is known throughout its almost 1,000 year history.
Ruins of a medieval castle now which grounds are being utilised as a public park. Ruins are in a good state, the park was relatively clean and tidy. Nice views from inside the castle. Free entry. Open 8am-6pm.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Good information boards, paths around the outside, well maintained. Not a huge castle but it's free so you can't complain
Egremont Castle is a well preserved motte and bailey ruin with medieval herringbone stone work along the wall to the left of the gatehouse entrance, as you face the entrance. Climb to the top of the motte and you will have a great view of Egremont. The surrounding gardens are not as attractive as in the past, when my Grandad was the grounds keeper, but still have a variety of different trees and lots of daffodils fill part of the grassed over moat. A good place for a little walk in the fresh air.
Interesting history with great fish and chips nearby

Interesting piece of history. Lovely little castle and it's free.
It's in ruins but still worth a walk around the place if you're in the area
