About Set on a beautiful island in the canal just 2 miles from Leeds city centre, Thwaite Mills is one of the last examples in Britain of a water-powered mill. Story Thwaite Mills opens on weekends and throughout the week during school holidays. Regular hours: Saturday and Sunday, 13:00 - 17:00 Please note that from 1 January 2018 weekend opening hours will be from 12pm to 4pm. School holidays/ bank holidays - Monday - Sunday, 10:00 - 17:00. (Last admission 15:30). Nestled on an island, Thwaite Mills is situated in beautiful riverside surroundings. The island is a rich wildlife habitat with areas of water, woodland, scrub and gardens attracting many species. Although only two miles from Leeds City Centre, at Thwaite Mills visitors can enjoy peaceful walks on beautiful paths alongside the Aire and Calder river, take advantage of waterside picnic areas, and enjoy a unique piece of Yorkshire’s industrial heritage. Step back in time inside Thwaite House, a fine Georgian Grade II listed building, now used for displays to show what life was like in the 1940s - don't miss our Anderson shelter! Thwaite Mills is a working watermill and you can experience the wheels in motion on a tour of the Museum.
