Story University Hospital Crosshouse is a large district general hospital in Kilmarnock, Scotland, built to replace the old Kilmarnock Infirmary. It is run by NHS Ayrshire and Arran providing services to the North Ayrshire and East Ayrshire areas, including the Isle of Arran. It is located one mile outside the town in the village of Crosshouse.HistoryThe hospital was completed by Melville Dundas & Whitson in 1978 and replaced the Kilmarnock Infirmary. It was opened as the North Ayrshire District General Hospital, but staff soon took to calling it "Nadge," hence the adoption of the local place name of Crosshouse.It was called Crosshouse Hospital until March 2012 when the board decided to change the name to University Hospital Crosshouse, as a result of a partnership with the University of the West of Scotland.In 2006, a new Maternity Unit was opened in the grounds of the hospital. The Ayrshire Maternity Unit replaced a similar unit at Ayrshire Central Hospital, Irvine.The hospital has a radio station, HBSA Hospital Radio, for patients.ServicesIt contains 645 staffed beds. It provides maternity services for the whole of NHS Ayrshire & Arran at the purpose-built Ayrshire Maternity Unit which has 51 inpatient beds, neonatal intensive and special care services. Paediatric services are also located at the hospital.
