About Kurt Schwitters' Merz Barn Wall is on permanent display at the Hatton. It is the only surviving example of Schwitters' Merz constructions. Story Hatton Gallery is currently closed for a £3.8 million redevelopment supported by the heritage Lottery Fund, reopening in October 2017. Hatton Gallery is the creative heart of Newcastle University. For over fifty years, we’ve been central to some of the most influential thinking in modern art. Our permanent collection includes works of international significance and we benefit from the community of artists and academics in Newcastle University’s renowned Fine Art department.
