Not for the faint hearted! Incredible views from up here, but the railings at the top and all the way up the stairs much lower than expected. Ladder at the top, and tiny hatch to crawl out through too, not ideal for short skirts, ha ha! Some very interesting maps and small displays inside.
Something so lovely about this place, free from the trappings of a 'forced experience' when it is enough to just to be here and soak up the history and views. The gorgeous old coloured glass, creating prisms of colour in light are beautiful. This is a really unique experience. It's a fat climb up the spiralling wrought iron staircase also beautiful but worth every step. The final steps to the top look scarier than they are think ladder and the view is a fabulous reward for your climb. I am very scared of heights, but as long as I have a sturdy barrier I am fine...the lighthouse has a sturdy barrier so I felt very safe! On a non-windy day you can go outside another excellent, sturdy barrier, a spectacular treat. We watched the chuffy train snaking across the landscape billowing a smokey greeting. Loved it!
Climb to the top of the old lighthouse to get a spectacular view over Dungeness. On a clear day you can see to France. Situated next to the nuclear power station. Fantastic lighthouse history preserved.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We didn't climb the lighthouse as we had the dog with us, but the area surrounding it was beautiful. It was misty the day we were there, which made it quite atmospheric. We did manage to find the lakes behind the lighthouse, and it was definitely worth the trek.Visited onPublic holidayReservation recommendedNot sure
Lots of steps to the top but our 4 year old put us to shame and led the way! They are very sensible about safety, not banning young kids but explaining the layout and hazards very clearly and letting parents decide. Apart from the great views there are interesting posters and exhibits on the floors to give yourself something to read as you catch your breath!
Great chance to do 5 floors with information on each. When you get to the top you can even go through a hatch and walk around the top it was extremely windy, so hold onto your hats!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A brilliant old lighthouse, the perfect accompaniment to your trip on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway, the lighthouse offers stunning views across the scene but not for those with a fear of heights! Well worth a visit!
A piece of history to explore and a 169 steps to the top. Lovely staff, fabulous views, lots of history and groundbreaking engineering for its time. Great for all ages but clearly not suitable if you are not able bodied. I loved it.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Lovely staff, lots of steps to the top but a view of the whole thing.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Located next to the Dungeness end of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway, The Old Lighthouse was built at the turn of the 20th century to replace the lighthouse next to the old lighthouse. Although the tower of that lighthouse is gone, the cottages remain and are now private homes. Climbing to the top of the Old Lighthouse, is not for the feint hearted as it is over 169 steps to the top, the last part being a ladder to the lantern. Also, you may find yourself having to either wait or allow other visitors time to get by. However, there are a few levels inside for people to wait in and catch their breath. Access to the outside of the lantern is through a small hatch in the side. For the brave, then the reward is far reaching views from Sandgate near Folkestone in the east, out towards. Rye and Winchelsea in the west. On a clear day, you can also see over to France. At the base of the tower is a small gift shop. For refreshments there is the café/giftshop across the road at the station. In addition, parking is free and close to the lighthouse, although this may be full at peak times. It is well worth a visit to the Old Lighthouse, although not for those with mobility issues for obvious reasons. Best done in conjunction with a trip on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway.
