Doune Castle
"Last entry is 4.45pm.This near-complete castle was the home of Regent Albany, Scotland's 'uncrowned king'. It was later a royal residence, a dower house for widowed queens and a Jacobite prison. The audio guide is narrated by two actors who have filmed scenes at Doune Castle: Terry Jones, director and star on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Sam Heughan, star of the hit TV show Outlander. The castle was also a filming location for Game of Thrones."

We loved our visit here in April 2023. Some areas were being actively worked on and were inaccessible. The audio tour was a lot of fun--included some sound from Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, which shot several scenes here.Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Used in many films and TV shows. It's a lot more to see than it looks from the outside. Definitely worth a visit. Great little gift shop inside. Be careful turning in to the driveway, its very tight and some people don't pay as good attention.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Loved visiting here! It was so much fun taking the audio tour and hearing the voices of Monty Python and Outlander characters provide history and fun facts. The gift shop had some great finds and the parking attendants were very helpful as well.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A beautiful castle which is partial ruins however the main castle itself is well maintained and they have the great hall on show as is Victorian interpretation. A great place to visit rich in history but also in pop culture has been used as a nacksrop for Monty Python, Game of Thrones and Outlander. Audio guides are included with the ticket so you get a great mix of its history and also its time in media
A very nice castle to visit. After visiting the castle we went for a walk and the area is simply amazing. Very friendly staff and this is the first time that a free audio guide is provided! This really made our visit more interesting and fruitful.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedYes
One of the highlights of an 18 day road trip. A lovely castle, with audio tour and a marked route that winds through the rooms. Real detail and interest. There are also some well-marked walks nearby. Fantastic, friendly, helpful staff. As a solo traveller I appreciate people smiling and chatting. I’d detour to return on my next trip.
Chose this castle quite by accident when researching castles to visit on the internet. Didn’t know that this castle was used to film episodes of outlander and Monte Python Movies. We got there quite easily as we had our own vehicle. Bought tickets online prior to arrival and this is recommended. If you can get a printout of tickets or a screenshot as there is no phone signal inside the castle itself. The castle itself was wonderful. The audio guide quite useful and well recommend. Very enjoyable and fascinating experience not too far from Edinburgh.
Basically a good castle to visit. It's not very large, and does not have a lot of rooms and chambers, so it will not cost much time to have a whole visit. However, this place was the setting and filming location for Game of Thrones and Outlander, so fans of these episodes should be quite willing to visit. One small regret is that the castle has recently been under repair, so the castle is surrounded by a fence and the grass in the middle of the castle has been closed off because it is wet and slippery. In general it is quite suitable for a leisurely walk, relaxation and a visit to an old medieval castle.
Doune castle is a must see for lovers of castles in Scotland, the tour is in-depth and informative and the well preserved building takes you back in time. Currently the back garden and the wall walk is still closed along with the cellar l. But it is still absolutely worth the visit after recently reopening
Great place and very well maintained. Parking is limited and if tickets are booked in advanced then you don’t need to wait too long. Staff is nice and helpful. The castle has helpful descriptions wherever needed and audio tours available as well.
