This really could be a great hotel, but it's currently rather tired. The staff are extremely helpful but lack training and leadership. The gym needs an upgrade and one is planned in June 24. The pool area is pleasant and supported with nice facilities. The pump was being replaced on the day we arrived. Breakfast was all self-service and, again, rather basic. We attended the hotel because of a family wedding reception.
Stayed here on short notice. The hotel is lovely, with very welcoming staff. The best part was the food. Absolutely, amazing evening meal and breakfast. The staff at the restaurant were absolutely lovely and a credit to the company. The Swimming pool area needs a bit of love however, it didn’t bother us. Thank you.
Lovely hotel just a bit dated and could do with a little makeover. Staff was welcoming and apologised for the wait due to short staff. The room was spacious and everything you needed for one night. The bar was exceptionally busy and due to short staff there were some tables uncleared and plates and glasses stacked up. Overall a pleasant short stay.
We had a uni catch up weekend here. Yes the hotel looked a little dated as did carpets but the rooms were spacious and beds very comfy - even my extra bed in the room. But the outstanding feature of the hotel was it's staff who were all friendly and helpful, from the room cleaner to the waiting staff. We had a very good deal of dinner, bed and breakfast and the only complaint was the length of time between courses on Friday night. On Saturday it was much better and the food was beautifully cooked and served. Lewis was our waiter and was happy to accommodate requests we have invented toffrogato as one of our party hates coffee and had a toffee sauce alternative to coffee. Avoid 4pm in the pool area, it's small and was full of children loudly enjoying the pool. I would be happy to stay here again, but would be sure to request the South facing garden view room again.
On paper this place looks perfect however the pictures are very deceptive. Firstly the lake shown on the website is non existent! It is peak summer and looked very poorly maintained. No lifts in the building and our room was situated what felt a mile away from reception. Now the rooms. We are in 2024 - why are there no fridges in the room?? Especially with no AC to keep the room cool. Very disappointing. The pillows are the most uncomfortable pillows I have ever slept in. For breakfast which I paid extra for there were never enough staff around. Coffee machine kept stopping , food not being topped up, no cutlery on tables. Overall a poor experience. I have stayed in many Doubletree Hilton’s but this was by far my worst experience
All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. For this I would give a 5* It was also great that there was complimentary electric car charging points and ample parking spaces for everyone. Breakfast was buffet style and delicious. Staff in the restaurant were very helpful and lovely! Unfortunately what let it down was the poor maintenance of the gym, spa, swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms. As well as the overall decor of the hotel. The sauna and steam rooms looked like they hadn't been cleaned for several months. The gym equipment was lacking and what equipment they did have was rusty and the seats and benches had holes or in some instances black tape to cover the holes. At the swimming pool the paint was peeling off the walls, Mop and bucket wasn't packed away everyday was the same which made if all feel messy. The floors and sun loungers looked dirty. There was LOTS of rust on the walls and changing room doors. The changing rooms were inadequate with not enough space for people to change. Toilet seats were hanging off, lockers had doors missing, it was dirty and just overall not a pleasant experience. The decor in the bedrooms were dated. The carpet around the hotel was also dated and in need of a wash. This hotel needs a refresh, a good spring clean and replace those hideous plastic plants for fresh ones!! It will transform your customers experience. There was no coffee available throughout the day because the machine was broken at the bar. It was only possible to get coffee in the morning with breakfast.
This was one of the worst 4 star hotels I have been to before. Staff were kind and usually helpful. Amenities were not always provided. No air-con, loud renovations at 7:00am. Restaurant was over priced. Overall not a very enjoyable experience. Rooms: Pro: Clean, Has Windows, Good Blackout Curtains. Room Service is good. Cons: Lack basic amenities e.g bath robes, slippers. No Refrigerator. Only 2 Spare Plugs to plug in your devices and No plugs beside the bed. Walkability: There’s a Local Pub connected to the hotel. There’s a Lidl supermarket next to hotel 2 min walk. Food & drinks: Expensive but mediocre quality .Hotel Restaurant
Pros: Spacious room, good breakfast. Lovely view from the room. Fan in the room. Cons: Chlorine filled the air in the swimming pool making the pool area itself not an enjoyable place to be. Room in need of a lick of paint. A long way from the room to the breakfast area and spa facilities with no lift available. Rooms: Spacious but in need of some repairs.
The accessible room in the hotel 401 was lovely if a bit tight inside as there was a lot of furniture, but not an issue. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was smallish but with 2 sinks and a roll in shower, was very practical. For wheelchair users, please be aware that there is a lift that takes you down to the restaurant/breakfast area but it has a weight limit of 140kg. If you are in a powered chair this may mean you will have to eat in the lobby area above the dining room, or go all the way around the hotel and use a ramp to get into the room. This happened to us but the staff were very helpful Lewis thank you and escorted us back round to the room and left a note for the breakfast staff that we would have to have breakfast in the lobby. Not ideal, as it was very busy with guests going to and from breakfast, coming back from the pool and carrying bags to the car. As other reviews have said, the hotel is generally getting a bit tired and in desperate need of a refurb, but it does have great character and charm. The dinner we had was excellent by the way.
Apart from a few cleanliness issues, everything was brilliant. The gym and pool facilities were great. The staff were amazing. Incredibly helpful and attentive. One night I asked for my steak to be re done and it was, no problem. The food was really topnotch. We chose dinner, b&b because we wanted to know we had two meals a day covered for our child. We were able to enjoy local pub lunches and didnt feel like we missed out. My only suggestion would be to stock local beers! Shout out: Alex in the restaurent. He was brilliant.
