Not the best of stations, since the subway was filled in 1989 if you can't get over the bridge or get a wheelchair or pram over the bridge it will be over a mile walk to the opposite platform via lots of roads, Victorians had more sense when they built the subway for freight & passengers. The ticket office is shut most of the time, there's a couple of machines to purchase tickets, brewery paid for a replacement station in 1989 in exchange for a lot of railway land, the land ended up getting hundreds of flats built on it and Dorchester lost its large south station with disabled access via a subway, heated waiting rooms, a cafe on platform with the ticket office, three platforms, toilets on two of the platforms open 24 hours a day as at one time the railway knew people may need the toilet, ticket office open nearly around the clock, no late or cancelled trains previous station didn't have a huge gap on the up platform to fall into, these dark days some times the Weymouth train uses the up platform to London which you have to watch out for so you don't miss the train, was a lovely pussycat on the platform last time I went to the station
Disabled access is poor. If you can’t manage the stairs to cross to the Weymouth platform, it’s a walk up Weymouth avenue up hill down a side road and the a slope down another road leading to the platform. In other words, a taxi ride for someone with mobility issues. There has been talk for years of getting lifts, but that’s all it’s been. Also note that it seems on weekends that the trains to Weymouth tend to depart from what is normally the London platform the side with the station building. But do check the live train departures on the website which will show the platforms for each train. Do note that on the London side again, there is relatively flat or less sloped access to the platform through the car park, just in case the steps and gradient by the station building are too much for you, but there isn’t a ticket machine placed here, so you would need to purchase online or get someone else to get your ticket at the station. All in all - could do a lot better.
A simple small station from which you can get a service to London Waterloo.
Only one seat on each of the 2 platforms. Ticket office was shut early Saturday afternoon. Train not on time, not much cover if it rains, station surrounded by flats, looks a right eyesore. No toilets on platforms. Big gap between train and platform as track is on a bend, very easy to fall in to the gap so poor health and safety
Built on a curve of track, this station and its waiting room are always busy but neglected. So much more could be made of this historic building and it is a pity it remains a pale shadow of its former glory. A mud track has been worn into the bank in front of the ticket office, where commuting footfall has established a shortcut which avoids the path.
