The history of Newcastle through the ages of work, immigration and how Newcastle & UK has adapted over the centuries. Started with Green energy, to sound & light. Ships, trains & engines. Free, but donations encouraged. Staff are friendly especially Rebecca in green energy section. Interactive things to do on every level. Wheelchair friendly throughout. Has a cafe, didn't go in. Has toilets. Lifts & ramps. Parking was £2.60 for 2 hrs.
This is a large museum with lots to see and do. From as far back as the Romans to modern history and science. It's worth a visit, so be prepared to spend some time here. There is also a cafe on the third floor which closes at 15:30. Go on. Give it a go.
This is a large and interesting museum, divided into themed areas. There's little overall sense of a theme so one can see radically varying ideas in conflict. One area presents the north-east's long history of inward migration, showing the positive and inspiring stories from the many people who have moved here, and why they did so. Another, titled Charge!, tries to show north-east military history and modern activities as a thrilling, inspiring Boys' Own story almost entirely free of injuries, deaths whether to soldiers or civilians or the political and economic purposes of the devastating wars that the UK has engaged in. Military propaganda abounds in this exhibition which includes war pornography magazines, and slick videos that explain nothing at all about, for example, our occupations of Afghanistan. Another exhibition of military technologies whitewashes what they were developed to do: kill, injure and destroy. A temporary exhibition, 'From Steam to Green', is a basic guide to the history of energy production in the region. While simple, it's well-presented and will keep kids occupied. That's also true of the science & technology exhibition on the top level which has lots of hands-on activities. It's a shame there's little opportunity for visitor feedback to individual exhibitions.
Nice museum, free entry. Lots of information about the history of Newcastle & also green energy. A couple of the signs had spelling mistakes. Great place to bring kidsVisited onWeekend
FREE entry, and a great Museum to spend a couple of hours, donations excepted the main attraction is, Turbinia, the 104 feet 9 inches 31.93 m ship built by Charles Algernon Parsons to test the advantages of using the steam turbine to power ships, which could go up to 34 knots 39 mph; 63 km/h, but plenty of other things as well.
Really cool place with friendly staff and interesting installations. Quality of the presented information is on high level. Also, facilities such as restrooms are clean and comfortable. Everything is accessible.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Enjoyed our time here, and learnt a bit about the history of Newcastle. Clean tidy place, friendly staff, with good facilities. Free admission but donation encouragedVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Great museum packed with interesting content about Newcastle, its industry and its people. Not just the stars like the Stevensons but also the ordinary folk of and in various backgrounds. My find there was the Turbinia! In a previous life I was a steam turbine engineer so for me that was a real treat to walk through the door and bump into that. And, what followed on from that did not disappoint. The staff were excellent. Special mention for Neville. The cafe was clean, tidy and reasonably priced. A nice selection of sandwiches, pastries, coffee, tea and soft drinks. The facilities were clean.
Really good free museum in Newcastle. New Steam to green exhibition is fantastic showcasing new essential technology each home needs like home batteries, solar, EVs and heat pumpsVisited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Always loved this museum ever since coming on a school trip. Free to enter, lots to see, read and interact with. Kids absolutely love it! Even if they're 38! Very close walking distance from Newcastle city centre and further attractions. I was however taken back by a small window of "artifacts" from the year of 1997. Yes. 1997. We. Are. That. Old. Anyhoo.. the rest of the museum was thorough enjoyable! Disabled access with lifts throughout. Some parking nearby but I recommend the metro to st.james or central station and walking in.
