Dirleton Castle
"Last entry 3.30pm.The gardens, exhibition and shop are open. The castle remains closed. Booking in advance is recommended to guarantee entry. Tease out the hints of a long and eventful history in these well-preserved ruins. Cross the deep moat guarded by high walls and an imposing tower, glancing up at the 'murder hole' above your head. Look for the vaulted dome inside the 1249 tower, the grim prison and pit and the 1550s 'beehive' dovecote."

What a beautiful little village Well kept village green, plenty of onstreet parking. Lots of access to the John Muir pathways...the mile leading to Yellowcraigs Beach is great and a what stunning little beach at the end!! The sand dunes keep it sheltered and apart from the seaweed as youd expect! a clean & pretty stretch of sand!. Responsible dog owners keep their dogs at heel / on lead due to the pheasants and abundance of young deer in the fields either side of the pathway. Unfortunately didn't make a trip to Dirleton Castle as we ran out of time but will make time next time we are in the area as it looks lovely & interesting....
We only were able to go around the gardens and view the castle thru a fence, but we enjoyed our trip and used the qr codes on the fence to view history etc. All staff were lovely and the gardens were gorgeous and still in full bloom, despite the best of summer being gone!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Sadly Castle is not open to public access, but still charging full prices for entrance. Good herbaceous border and some nice trees.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Dirleton Castle is one of Scotland’s oldest surviving strongholds. The 13th-century fortress was for 400 years a magnificent fortified residence to three successive noble families – the de Vauxs, Haliburtons and Ruthvens. The Gardens The gardens that grace the castle grounds today date from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The formal Victorian west garden – with its foliage plants and geraniums – was faithfully reconstructed in 1993. Fragrant herbaceous borders greet you as you enter the estate. These belong to the beautiful north garden, which dates from the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1920s. Natural history The garden has a rare ginkgo, or maidenhair tree, a species unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs. Thought to be native to China, the gingko was introduced to Europe in 1730. Its leaves are unique: they have a distinctive double-lobed shape, giving the tree its proper Latin name Ginkgo biloba. Ginkgos are long-lived and are very disease-resistant, surviving well in polluted cities. Ginkgo trees growing in Hiroshima survived the atomic bomb blast of 1945. Great Castle ruin, enjoyed my visit and hope to return at an unspecifed future date
We we're there today for a medieval times things learning about how people lived in those times very interesting it's a nice wee castle shame that at the moment you can't go in it for a look around due to it getting some much needed maintenance but the grounds are very nice to walk around it's on the route of the west Lothian 124Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoParking spaceSomewhat difficult to find parkingParking optionsFree parking lot
Very well kept gardens and grounds to walk around. Not very big with access into the castle itself currently restricted. Wouldn’t have wanted to pay entry if not an Historic Scotland member. Will go back again when castle is open. Small free car park just outside with public toilets and a little children’s play park
Such a lovely place. Beautiful garden.
We went over for the medieval weekend. The castle was closed due to maintenance yet we paid £3.50 per person which included the fair and gardens. The gardens consisted of a bowling green and a few flowers that you could see in 5m. The fair included a few tents in a small space. We were looking to get something traditional to eat. We thought we were lucky as the last tent had some bread, cheese and scones. To our surprise there were only for the actors. We paid £7 to get to see a group of people eating as they supposedly did in medieval times.
Very varied and full, nice gardens and lots of space in grounds Castle is really great, ideal for walking around and great photo opportunities and all in beautiful DirletonVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Great visit. Caring staff made sure visitors were Covid-19 secure. Wonderful views of Bass Rock and a fascinating history was revealed as we journeyed around the castle.
