Having enjoyed this local restaurant for years we have been tonight and have been very disappointed both with the service and the standard of the food. We waited nearly an hour and a half for our main courses, one of which was a T bone steak and never recieved an item of the starter we asked for. When the steak finally arrived it was tough and under cooked. The waiter was completely disinterested and in fact argued with me when asked if I was satisfied. Will now never use this restaurant again and certainly would not recommend it.
A wonderful place for a relaxed family meal, a nice atmosphere with interesting views and decor. The food is first class, the staff are friendly and very professional. Excellent value for money and highly recommendable for a visit.
We have been to this Resturant. On many occasions i.e.; birthdays anniversaries and Sunday lunches but I must admit the last two times we went there we found the service was not as good as usual and the food was not up to the usual standard either. It is such a shame as it is local to us and in the summer you can sit by the river. Let's hope it might improve in the future and we can go and enjoy some lovely food once again.
Been a fan of John Dickens for 25+ years right back to his restaurant in Wethersfield. Regularly drive to Halstead now to savour the most excellent food and the mill is a great location with a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend it.
Never had a bad meal yet! Outstanding food, freshly cooked, that tastes amazing!! my favourite place to eat In the town and the area for that matter
Booked a table only to find upon arrival that our table had been given to someone else. We were then seated at a table at the end of the bar by the door which was not very warm and were told that someone would be over in a minute. Drinks were not offered at this time which, should have been given to us complimentary as way of an apology for the table error. We were then given the menus and left again without asking whether we knew what we'd like to drink. When a waitress did finally come over after a further 10 minutes she could not understand what it was we asked for. I asked for a pint of tap water and she proceed in looking down the wine menu for it! There were plenty of staff but they all seemed to be more occupied with serving people in the main restaurant. On more than one occasion we witnessed all of the serving staff disappearing into the kitchen together! It was at the point of the drinks taking shambles that we had had enough and decided to walk out.
Never had a bad meal here yet!! Food stalwart top class freshly cooked staff are great too
Good food small venue. We had a large group and had to sit on 2 tables rather than one big one.
I love this place and we don't visit it enough. The food is fresh and lovely with staff that are always more than helpful.
Great lunch - excellent food friendly staff and reasonable prices. Nice room too
