The Church of St Mary in Derwen, Denbighshire is home to a remarkable Perpendicular rood screen complete with rood loft. The church dates from the 13th century but the shape of the churchyard suggests it may have been founded earlier. Minor additions and alterations occurred in the following centuries. The most interesting feature of the church is the rood screen. Erected in the 15th century, it is one of only a small handful in Wales that retains its rood loft. The foliate carvings along the bressummer are ornate and extensive. The churchyard cross near the south porch is another interesting, 15th century feature. St Mary’s is a redundant church looked after by Friends of Friendless Churches. It closed for worship in 1999.
