An interesting but slightly rustic and poor quality infrastructure museum that would be good if it wasn't so bloody shabby. Everything has been put together on the cheap, which is just the way we do things. Take your time and there is plenty to interest. Much of this though is written material and takes some time and patience to get through...you will struggle a bit to do this with children in tow. The Museum needs a refresh...it needs some money, a plan and some professional help.
A very interesting and informative centre across the road from the actual prison. There is an amazing mass of written history and artefacts around the museum inside and out. We were the only visitors as it is November I guess. Most enjoyable and somewhat scary!
Great place to visit if you like prison or prison related stuff. It's just a museum so you don't get chance to see any prisoner. All the setup including the history nicely created with well explained manner.
Excellent museum, the guy who let us in and gave a brief introduction was especially informative as he was previously a guard at the prison, I could've happily spoken to him for hours. The displays were all very good and told the history of the place superbly. If I had to give any criticism, it was especially cold downstairs, mostly due to the bad weather on the day but I'd recommend taking a jumper in with you.
Staff were friendly exhibits were interesting. Dog friendly which was nice. I would not say this was wheelchair accessible. Yes you can access part of the building on the ground floor. Good little museum staff were friendly and informative lots of information and exhibits covering the whole history of the prison on the moor up to modern day times. The museum is run by the prison service and its within the prison estate so prison rules apply to things like photography being prohibited. Takes about an hour to get around free carpark on site. The museum its self is in the old prison farm and there are several sets of steps inside that may prove difficult for someone with impaired mobility.
The HMP Dartmoor will probably remain open in 2023. I've had wonderful times here. The inmates were great. The guards were okay too and helped you when you needed something. Maybe I'll manage to sit there one more time before it closes :D
An excellent museum with loads of interesting items. Very knowledgeable staff who took time to take us through the details of the prison, and the museum. A small gem and affordable.
What can I say.... even charging £4 for an adult is a bit much. Everything is thrown together there's no information all moth eaten. Just seems like someone's hobby half hearted items has got out of control. Wasted half hour but would never visit again, sorry.
