Nice decor, friendly staff and good food. Father-in-law happy as they did proper pies!!
Never normally do bad reviews as there is plenty of negative in the world, but if I can help you avoid this place, I'd be doing some good for this world. The service was atrocious. The food was diabolical. The atmosphere was depressing. We all had a 3 Course Meal, we hadn't even finished our starters and all our main meals came out and they placed them on the table and walked off.... The meals were lukewarm, we then didn't even see any staff members for around 10 minutes so we just started to eat our meals as it would be just a waste and it's the not the waiters fault that we have our meals early, this would be down to the kitchen and management not having an idea about what a 'starter and a main meal is', I've worked in a kitchen for several years and I know how it works. Then furthermore my friend had a mixed grill and he was eating the gammon and as I found out afterwards from him it was dryer than the Sahara Desert he says, he started choking and he started going purple, and I had to perform the Heineken manoeuvre on him as he was choking for about 15-20 seconds and you guessed it.... Not one single staff member came over to check to see if he was alright or offer him a glass of water, they all just blanked us. After all that we had our dessert and as we were handed our dessert they asked if we'd like to pay.... We hadn't even picked up our spoons yet. All that just left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never ever go there again for anything... not even to use the loo's.
Problems with our groups order, also I would consider it to be slow service particularly since they had our pre order earlier in the week and still got things wrong. This was not a busy night by any means and I hesitate to think what the service will be like in the week up to and around Christmas. Extra sides that were not ordered were delivered, pigs in blankets were overdone almost to the point of being burnt, and all of the beef shank main courses for our group were missing the roasted sprouts that should have been on the plate according to the printed menu. On the positive side the portions were hot and well proportioned and the serving staff were polite and friendly. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, clean and not cramped.
I had great expections after reading the reviews, sadly the Cross Keys did not live up to them, the squid starter was chewy and clearly over cooked. I ordered the trio of meats, for a sunday roast. The beef was tough and inedible, the pork was extremely thinly sliced and dry, the crackling was miniscule and soggy, The yorkshire pudding was stodgy and very unappealing. The veggies were just a bit to al dente, almost undercooked. The roast potatoes were tasteless and quite strange tasting. The stuffing was bland. And the gravy was extremely salty. But credit is due when I feed this back to the manager, it was taken on and used as an opportunity to improve. The cost of the uneaten meals were removed from the bill. I will visit again to see if this was a one off bad experience. Photo 4 shows the pork crackling
Really nice food, warm welcome by staff. Food came in good time and was worth the money as tasted great. Friendly atmosphere and everywhere seemed well maintained. We were acknowledged straight away by staff on walking through the front door, lots of parking outside although the carpark was a bit flooded. Have to say a big thank you to Declan as he was a professional host to us and was really great with our 5 year old. Definitely will come back again.
Food was excellent this evening and very friendly service by all. Thank you
Nice atmosphere. Slightly disappointed with food, ordered the festive menu and extra sides of pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese. Checked on arrival that the sides had been preordered. Told they had. When the meals arrived we were informed that the sides were unavailable.
Perfect Christmas dinner. Great food, turkey was spot on and all the trimmings! Lovely starter and trio of puds. Staff were great and the service was great too. Look forward to coming back
Having been here a few times over the years whilst under different management & having left feeling underwhelmed. I felt it right to finally give a review based on our experience yesterday. We are foodies. We LOVE to eat out. Have eaten in lots of high end establishments all over the UK for many years. However, we are just looking for a cosy Sunday roast on a miserable day. We ordered the Trio of roasts & a pork loin with a side of pigs in blankets & a Yorkshire pudding filled with shredded beef dripping. It far surpassed our expectations. Every single item of food on those plates was not only seasoned to perfection & full of flavour but most importantly cooked to perfection as well. I was shocked that a local pub was putting out food of this quality at those prices. It was all super fresh & we left feeling incredibly full. We even skipped dessert which we never do. I believe the Chef on the day was 'Mark'. We paid compliments to him via the staff. The waitresses couldn't do enough for us depsite being really busy. When you ask for extra gravy anywhere else you usually get a very teeny little jug. Not here. They pulled out a standard size jug for us to share. This will now be our go to pub for our Sunday lunch without doubt. The staff are friendly, smiley & welcoming. Keep the chef guy's & keep up those amazing food standards. Well done See you soon x
Booked a table online for 8 o clock last week, on arrival at the pub were told that they were very sorry but the kitchen had closed at eight so we couldn't get served. We were informed that they had tried to call us but due to the locality we had no signal and so did not get the call. What I don't understand is why we were able to book a table for a time that wasn't possible. We were not even offered a complimentary drink by way of apology. I would never use this companies chain of pubs in the future.
