Crich Tramway Village

Story

The National Tramway Museum is located at Crich, Derbyshire, England. The museum contains over 60 (mainly British) trams built between 1900 and 1930 and is set within Crich Tramway Village, a period village containing a pub, cafe, old-style sweetshop and tram depots. The museum's collection of trams runs through the village setting with visitors transported one mile out into the local countryside and back. The trams at Crich mostly ran along the streets of cities in United Kingdom before the 1960s, with trams rescued and restored (even from other countries) as the systems closed. The village is also home to the Eagle Press, a small museum dedicated to letterpress printing including an 1859 Columbian printing press.History of the museumDecline of tramwaysMost of the tram networks, with a few exceptions closed before the 1960s. The last to close was Glasgow Corporation Tramways in 1962, a tramway well represented at the museum. There has been a recent revival in the use of trams, with new networks opened including Croydon Tramlink, Sheffield Supertram, Midland Metro, Edinburgh Trams, Manchester Metrolink and the nearby Nottingham Express Transit being built and extended.

I went there the other week with my daughter and grandad kids. It's a great place to visit for all age groups. We had a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 month old baby, pram access was no problem as there are ramps down to the main area, which is only 20 ft or so. There are tram rides up to the top all day long and usually 3 different trams to ride on. At the top there is a walk back down if you want to through the woods with different things for kids to see, there is a playground for kids as well. There are loads of old trams in an exhibition hall from all over the world and one you can go in and have a look around. There is a cafe, a pub, a gift shop, an old fashioned sweet shop and ice cream parlour. It's a great day out for all ages and abilities
We took our grandson to the lights day on Saturday 9.11.24. We arrived about 1.30 and left about 7pm. All the staff and volunteers are so friendly and very informative about the trams, the museum, and their life as the character they are dressed in. It was very chilly and they must have been very cold, but they were brilliant. Beautiful old trams in very good condition all lit up allso lots of other things to see and do. Great day out we all really enjoyed it. Thank you to you all and very well done
This is one of the best days out I’ve had with my kids. My kids are 5 and 3 and loved everything about the village and the whole day. We were there for most of the day and still didn’t do all of it. We rode on a lot of teams which were so lovely- like stepping back in time. The staff were so friendly and lovely throughout the day- from our warm welcome to our warm departure. Such a great day. The kids love the tram exhibition room and the indoor soft play too. We had sweets from the sweet shop, a drink in the pub and I would like to see what the new cafe is like as I think it will do good business and I hope it’s in keeping with the village. Would highly recommend and we will be coming back- free for 12 months too!
Fantastic day for the family. So much to see and do, a full days worth of adventure. We started by getting the 10.30am tram, after handing over our pennies to the conductor pennies given to us at the entrance after paying admission we received a ticket in return. We rode the full line then got off and wandered up to see a performance from "Notice this notice" theatre company brilliant! We walked to the children's play area, clean and well maintained, lots of seating. Another tram ride, some lunch, another tram ride then we stopped off so we could go along the woodland walk, where we saw some fantastic wood carvings and sculptures, played the drums, ran round the labyrinth, back to the park, then soft play, followed by ice-cream, more trams, the workshop, and more. We can't wait to return and explore this place again. The volunteers are all lovely, friendly and passionate! Extremely welcoming people! Thanks
I came here when I was a little kid. But couldn't remember much about it. So as a family who had never been before we were excited. The kids thought it was fantastic. Rode the tram a couple of times. Had a walk through the woodland area found loads of tree carvings hidden. It became a game to find them all. We walked around all the old trams and investigated all the touch and feel buttons, lift flaps and noises in the indoor museum We paid 52 for a family ticket. The bonus is you can return as many times as you with within 12 month. So we will definitely be returning as it was such fun. We were all given an old coin to pay for our tram ride. Added excitement for the kids who then got an all day ride ticket Would recommend if you haven't been before. Great for small kids up to teens. There is a cafe where you can get food and alcohol beverages too for the grown up ice cream parlor with lots of flavors We pre booked before we went or you can pay on entering £25 adults, £ 14 children concession £20 We spent 6 hours here as we wanted to see everything.
We were here on a rainy day, chilly but good for us since then we didn't want to spend a lot of time walking. If there is good weather then we wouldn't feel like we had seen anything since it has so much. However although all personnel are great here, at the entrance there could have been more enthusiasm. We asked where the police box was and she didn't know. However in the sweet shop and the other shop they were selling both police box things and Dr Who thingies, so she should have known. Also we can understand it could have been a rough day for her, but also asking for another question and she was not so friendly or happy about having people asking questions. And anyway all the other people working there are amazing. The kids loved to take the trams up and down there. The exhibition was extremely good have visited a lot of different sorts of them but this is both for adults and children. And the play area, wow this has so much heart in it . Thanks also for making us feel more welcome than the entrance lady.
Excellent day out, made all the better by the people who run it. We were there in a large group of all ages, and everyone enjoyed it. Packed full of history and great to ride the trams. They're currently building a new cafe so it'll be even better when that's finished.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
Great day out with lots to see and do... the Trams are fantastic and the Staff are all very welcoming, friendly and informative! We enjoyed the woodland walk and the views are stunning... The only negative the WORST latte we've ever had anywhere, too small, way too strong and lacking in milk...Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great place to go, it's a small village but decent enough. Sweet shops, discovery centre, pub and new cafe opening soon. It also had ice cream parlour. Can go on woodland walk by catching the tram which you can use how many times you want. Also small soft play area for children.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A perfect day out for families. We went on a lovely sunny Sunday and got there when it first opened at 10 am. It is £23 per adult, but your ticket lasts for 12 months. English Heritage members can also get 2 for 1 on tickets. We travelled on the 2 trams first before they got busy. There are plenty of vintage trams to see and places to explore. It is perfect for families with a woodland walk and large play area and lots of picnic spots. Highly recommend.
