Cressington Station

Story

Cressington railway station serves the Grassendale district of Liverpool, England. It is situated on the Southport-Hunts Cross route of the Northern Line of the Merseyrail suburban system. The station takes its name not from a district in Liverpool, but the nearby Cressington Park.HistoryThe station, originally called Cressington & Grassendale, opened in 1864 as part of the Garston and Liverpool Railway line between Brunswick and Garston Dock. In 1865 the station and line were incorporated into the Cheshire Lines Committee. The station closed in 1972 but reopened in 1978 as part of the Kirkby-Garston line of the Merseyrail system. Services were extended from Garston to Hunts Cross in 1983, and diverted to Southport instead of Kirkby in 1984.From 11 December 2006 the Monday-Saturday evening service was increased to run every 15 minutes, instead of half-hourly as previously. The station is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building, and has a traditional façade. As part of the Merseyrail upgrade, the platforms were lengthened to accommodate 6-car trains. This proved problematic, as the station is situated between two bridges in a narrow cutting. Special dispensation was given by the Railway Inspectorate to build the platforms narrower than the 6ft width which would normally be required.

Stunning station on the Merseyrail Hunts Cross station. It has regular services into Liverpool, the staff are friendly and it's clean and tidy. The architecture of the well looked after building makes this a pleasant place to wait for your train. There is some seating available, although it could benefit from some extra benches further down the platform.
I've had to use a mobility scooter and there are 3 flights of stairs here. Not ok!
A quiet station on the Merseyrail Northern Line. It has a staffed ticket office and toilet. Trains are every 15 minutes and travel between Southport and Hunts Cross. The station is on Knowsley Road off Aigburth Road but not signposted.
Nice period architecture and leafy surroundings, in fact just about as perfect a throwback to the days of steam as one will find anywhere in the country at least in suburban settings. However, parking space on the road directly outside the station entrance is extremely limited and prohibited completely on other roads in the area where, unusually, enforcement is in the hands of a private company – you have been warned. Stairs only down to platform level.
Such a beautiful period Victorian/Georgian arquitecture area. The Rail Station is awesome coming right from a Charles Dickens book. Sometimes you ask yourself if you are in a theatre or in real streets with historical houses so well taken cared and preserved. It's a feast for the eyes.
Nice little train Station. Only a 10 Minute ride to Liverpool centre. Historic atmosphere and, at least compared to Germany, cheap Ticket prices
Train station is well kept, but could be improved by placing in a ramp or a lift so it is accessible for disabled people.
As a foreigner it was amazing to see something real british. So much cozy architecture. Was there in 2013. Thank you! I will always remember!
Nice stuff . Never drive on the bike
Old fashioned station, stairs are steep and no lift though.
