Friendly staff, come here most days and always feel welcome

Was not very happy with my first encounter at this store. I purchased two  chocolate eclairs but upon opening the pack the eclairs were Rock hard. I went back into the store to complain about the state of both the eclairs and was told that they are close to the sell by date and because they are on sale or return there was nothing they could do about it. He even stuck his finger into it and agreed it was hard !! We argued for a short time and then I told them they were not complying with my rights under the sale of goods act and my rights as a consumer at which point another lady said " give him his money back ". Should this have been so difficult.
