Coloma Convent Girls' School

Story

Coloma Convent Girls' School is a Roman Catholic school in a semi-rural location in Shirley, on the outskirts of Croydon, South London, England. Coloma is a comprehensive school, so does not select its pupils: it has a history of selection, having been a grammar school for much of its history, and a grant-maintained school in 1994-1999.The school selects a number of pupils at 11+ or 16+ for music scholarships; all other girls are admitted using a religious-based points system.Since September 2010 the school has operated The Quest Academy in the form of an academy trust.HistoryThe school regards its founder as being the Very Reverend Canon Constant Van Crombrugghe, who founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph in Belgium in 1817. There is a bronze bust of Van Crombrugghe in the Main Hall. The school opened on 2 August 1869, with one pupil. In 1871, property was found in Tavistock Road, Croydon, and named Coloma. The school remained there until its move in 1965 to the present site.Admissions policyGirls wanting to attend the school are admitted using a religious observation points system, which is intended to give priority to candidates who are seen as the most devout, and to families who are most active in the church. The school is one of a small group of Catholic comprehensives to have adopted this system, along with the London Oratory School, Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School and the John Fisher School. Prior to the year 2000 most of these schools admitted a percentage of their pupils based on ability, aptitude or through an interview process. The points system is seen by some as a way for these schools to protect the Catholicity of their intake.

Do you not believe you should do something other than a parent's meeting regarding a student brandishing a weapon and threatening other children within your premises? It is very concerning that you care more about the length of girls' skirts than the safety of your students. Very appalling and incidents such as the afore mentioned should be brought to the local police's attention. Instead of sending surveys to your students as to why they feel unsafe, do something about the fact that they feel unsafe.
As someone who has been to this school, I don’t recommend unless you are willing to dedicate your life to it, I wish you luck. The education is poorly: teachers take our learning away because they can't tell of people properly. Teachers are racistthey do nothing about thisand pick on certain people as if there aren’t other people messing around, school does not make me feel safe + if i protest about it then i would be called a miss behaved girl. There are rumours and gossip every single week and people have been hurt. Some people have not been taught how to behaviour, does a student causing a physical fight/hurting another student sound responsible to you? where is the slack and proper in that. The buildings are unhygienic: water leaks through classes when someone spills water ants are crawling in the huts and when it’s winter there is no heating. The rooms are stuffy when it’s hot, where is the air conditioning? plus the windows are either locked or don’t open any further. The school rules are out of order,: if a student can’t wear hoop earrings or multiple earrings then neither should teachers. This should apply the same for all and girls have no freedom to express themselves when there is a mufti day. Overall it’s the rules and the teachers fault for putting kids at a horrible state. Please fix this
In my few years of attending Coloma, my experiences haven't been all too bad. Although the general community within the students of coloma is quite fantastic and mainly positive, I must say that many other pupils and I have encountered extremely unpleasant situations with staff where we have felt that certain people were perhaps treated differently due to an unfair reason that should not at all change the way that someone thinks about a person. Students and I are also concerned for the quality of the education that we will receive next year due to the amount of teachers that are leaving their jobs. Not only now, but even during lockdown the teachers were not performing efficiently with keeping our grades to a decent level. A point I would also like to raise is about how the school is left after all 6 periods. The classrooms and toilets are in a horrible state and aren't cleaned properly when and where necessary. If you are thinking about sending your daughters here, please keep the negative reviews in mind. I hope that in the next years to come, Coloma will improve and bounce back to its high standards. Thank you for reading.
I go to this school right now , I will probably get in trouble for writing a review however I am going to voice my views as personally I don’t feel they are addressed in school .I wouldn’t rate this school however I need to otherwise my voice wouldn’t be heard . I feel like many students have the mindset that they will fail , as we feel like there are more cover lessons than actual lessons . There is bare minimum effort from some of the teachers , and some teachers can’t control a class !! There is nothing to make the students happy or looking forward to school until the last 2 weeks of the academic year . There are loads of rules students have to follow which I don’t understand as many of us feel like our basic human rites have been taken away from us . We aren’t allowed to fill up our water bottles or go to the toilet during lessons , and if we have to , we have to get a behaviour point for basic rites . I don’t see how wearing more than one earring, or dying out hair different colours affects our learning in school . Teachers would rather spend 10 minutes of their lesson time correcting and shouting at teenagers rather than crack on with the lesson . Many of the students don’t understand why we have to wear our blazers around school , as we aren’t out of school or representing it . There are many issues that students feel they can’t address with members of the school as there is no trust there . Teachers expect us to give them respect when there’s no return ? That’s not okay ! I don’t think you should send your daughters here as the school makes people feel uncomfortable and horrible being themselves in their own skin . There is so much more myself and many others could write about the school , this is just some of the things . Yours sincerely Terri .
If u think Coloma is a good skl then u r delusional. I am a black student and multiple members of staff confuse me w other black girls who look completely different.I have been harassed by many teachers because of my skin colour just because I am black doesn’t make me different to any of the other students it doesn’t mean I’m dumber or are more likely to steal I would like to be treated with respect just like anyone else .They also butcher and make fun of names that are hard to pronounce. I am a student at coloma and the headteacher doesn’t even allow us to watch films because apparently it’s un-edicational. Also she doesn’t let us wear jewlery even though multiple staff members including her wear jewellery all the time.over all it’s such a bad inviroment and I feel bad for the new yr6 coming to Coloma next year.
In response to Kay Kay - she is absolutely right. I went there in the 1990s and it was exactly like this back then. Sad to hear that nothing much has changed. The white, rich girls were always favoured over non-white, poor ones such as myself. The school was rife with elitist, arrogant teachers, many of which had no clue how to teach or connect with pupils. The pupils themselves were snooty to you if you were not rich. It damaged my confidence so much that I left there believing I was stupid. But I had the last laugh because I ended up getting a PhD a few years ago, in spite of them. Something I bet they never thought I could achieve.
i cant believe i go 2 this skl. coloma 'requires improvement' which is utterly embarrassing and very much needed. my classes have always been distrupted by teachers waffling about our behaviour and all that but its NEVER my classmates. ive noticed that there a particular students in my class who get picked on alot by teachers and i think its rlly rude and RACIST of them to do so. they know they did nothing wrong yet teachers ignore and send misconducts any way possible. some teachers are "alright" others need therapy and a change of mind seriously. even if your 1 mins later they give you a misconduct and im so annoyed by the staff who always ALWAYS just do everything WRONG. i hate it here and i always feel sad and bored. so coloma think about all the things you have done and change it up. secondary skl is literally everyones downfall you aint ever getting back up unless you "WORK HARD" and "OBEY THE RULES AND YOU WONT GET THE BAD SIDE OF ME ON YOUR REPORT". worse skl everrr dont come here unless you are wannabe baddies.
I go to Coloma and I feel like the school it’s self need a lot of improvements. The teacher need to know how to talk to the children but apart from that Coloma is OK.
Just got to know that the school has been DOWNGRADED to "Requires Improvement" by Ofsted. This should have happened a long time ago. It's a nasty school with staff full of inflated ego and empty pride. The school has destroyed my daughter's self-esteem and self-confidence with their pathetic "safeguarding" and indifferent attitude. The school, it seems, practises systematic segregation. You can see this in the way classes are organised - you will find students belonging to a particular "race/class" put together in a group. It's utterly disgusting. The teaching is poor. During Covid-19 lockdown, there was virtually no proper teaching. My daughter was told to follow the homework instructions and was left to her own devices. Fakery cannot last long. The school has artfully engineered its image over the years and presented a facade of brilliance. But sadly, behind that "nice" facade has lurked incompetence and insensitivity. The school is a total failure, and I do not know how many students' lives it has destroyed.
Discipline, hard work, decency and perseverance are a few of the values you learn at Coloma. So proud my daughter attends the best school in Croydon and by far one of the best in the whole of the entire UK. This school just shapes you into a real lady and prepares you for life. I always tell my daughter: “Don’t just go through Coloma, let Coloma go through you”
