A thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating experience. We decided to take one of the tours with a guide so discovered a lot. Having said that, my only suggestion would be to allow those on a paid tour to be able to return into the building again, after the tour finishes, as there was no chance to actually absorb everything that was going on in some of the rooms, especially those with detailed panels that we could not read. So it felt like we could only learn from the guide but not have a chance to really discover everything this wonderful place offers.
A fascinating place to visit, with really informed and enthusiastic guides bringing the past to life. I visited with 3 children, and the staff made a real effort to engage them in the history of the factory, answering their questions and explaining the activities that took place in each room. There were a number of things that made the visit memorable for me: Rather than row upon row of cabinets, this museum feels more like you are visiting while the staff are all out on a tea break. The tools are in place as if waiting to be picked up; the packages are waiting to be boxed and sent out. There are QR codes that link to fascinating oral histories and video material As Newmans were a wholesaler of everything funereal bar coffins, there are thought provoking items everywhere - like the salesman's demo bag, the robes designed to dress a corpse quickly and the labels waiting to go in boxed product that in their simple starkness cover the human sadness at the other end - "Infant Shrouds" priced by the height of the child. Thoroughly recommend a visit !
This place isn’t morbid, as the name may possibly imply. It’s the most fascinating insight into the furniture that goes on coffins, handles etc, and shroud making. Including royal coffin furniture supplying. This is one of the best museums I have ever visited, it’s a must if you are in Birmingham, or anywhere nearby, travel to it, you absolutely will not be disappointed. The staff, volunteers, are just brilliant, Owen is so informative and his enthusiasm for the place is contagious. Cornelius is demonstrating a trade that is so important and very impressive. It’s very different from any other museum you will ever visit. It’s actually just as it was left when the business closed. Thank you for a great experience.
Visited on my birthday for something different. It was so interesting and well preserved. Chris was very informative and great at answering any questions throughout the tour. Even learnt a bit about the Brookfields cemetery, which we visited later.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great experience and a very informative tour by Cornelius. With going and having a look. The museum gives a glimpse into industrial Birmingham and Victorian manufacturing innovations. Thanks for a wonderful time.
Really fascinating place. We only had a taster tour as we visited for Heritage Day but our guide was knowledgeable and interesting. We'll be back for the full tour next time we are in Birmingham.
I visited the museum at the beginning of May with my husband while we were doing a short trip to Birmingham and I have to say that it was one the most interesting activities we did there! Our guide Mark was very kind and had many fun facts about the factory itself but also about the town which made the visit a very nice overview of what was Birmingham during the industrial revolution. The people in the museum and the gift shop were all lovely and we really enjoyed our time there. I can't recommend it enough to visit this museum as you'll learn a lot about Birmingham's industries and all the interesting things about this factory.
A super-interesting museum with very personal interactions from the volunteers, some of whom worked there years ago when it was still operational. If you fancy a change from pictures and fossils fare, try coffin furniture!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Mike showed us around and explained everything in a very exciting and interesting way, the workshops are still in the same condition as when they were abandoned. We had a very good time. Thank you!
A very interesting museum about the making of the details in coffins! The guide was very friendly and had a lot of knowledge to share. Loved it!Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
