We love this place. Great location real personality. It is a venue built in to a cliff!!! Great staff brilliant food and a view that can't be beat if you are sitting inside or outside. A must visit. We have not stayed here yet but we will be soonFood: 5/5
The setting is amazing, located at the foot of the cliffs in caves it truly is a unique experience. Given the reviews we had no worries but unfortunately the food was not the best. There are different menus' between day and evening and table booking is not available during the day. Food waiting times can vary depending on how busy they are, it was 10min when we arrived and had risen to 45min when we ordered. Serving staff were charming, attentive and helpful. Pricing was acceptable and did not appear to be overtly expensive. Accessibility is ether via the lift or, for the brave of heart, steel steps down the cliff face! All in all a most excellent venue as long as your not expecting exceptional food.
Excellent location that is particularly unique. Food and service goes together very well and won't disappoint. You can find rooms as well as an excellent menu all day. Definitely worth a seat in the cave area at the back but also good views for summer outside.
First time I have visited here but its a very cosy place. The inside of the restaurant and bar was far better than I expected and the private beach was just great. We had some snacks and a couple of coffees and it was very pleasant. Would visit again. Kid-friendliness: No problem at this time with kids. Dog friendly too. Parking: Quite a large car park next to the entrance. Not too expensive either.
Amazing quirky pub in cliffs. Half cave, half building. Amazing sea views. Pleasant and unusual interior but taciturn staff and uncleared tables didn't help the vibe and there were few in, so not much atmosphere. We'll visit again in the summer. Wheelchair accessibility: Parking outside and lift down to the pub through the rock.
This visit in Nov was an emotional one as a dear friend in Sunderland who brought me here for the first time 47 years ago has passed away. Standing at the bar counter brought back wonderful memories of my time with him and his family when I was a student. I am glad this unique grotto is still there and the views of the coastline and the North Sea are still as stunning as when I first saw it 47 years ago. It was my maiden trip to England. I was then only 21 years old. As I am now already 68, I doubt very much that I will be able to visit this wonderful place again in the future.
Lovely staff moved heaven and earth to get us into the grotto for food at short notice. Lovely meal. Also the confused look on passenger's face when they arrive at a cliff edge and are told you're going for dinner unaware the column of bricks is a lift down to the bar/resturaunt is priceless. Resturaunt itself Lovely. Exterior of the hotel could do with a little work but Lovely environment and great place to sit and look out to sea.
All though I totally love this place it felt as though something was missing. There was more staff than customers but none the less they were as friendly and polite as ever. The room could have been a tad cleaner and expected more personal touches for the price they charge, but probably won't stop us going again and again, will just have to save up longer Haha.
Unique and unusual, the atmospheric Marsden Grotto comes high on our list of places to visit. Actually built into the cliff rocks on Marsden beach, the inside is truly a grotto experience. We used the inner grotto bar for our visit, where we enjoyed a casual lunchtime drink. The lighting within enhances the rough rock walls and helps to produce a relaxed atmosphere. We will enjoy visiting again.
Great place. Fabulous location with outside seating and amazing views. Sadly let down by staffing issues. One member of staff on duty doing everything. Waited 2o mins at the bar for 2 coffees. Sign on bar stating minimum 1 hour wait for food. Shame really because the place itself is stunning and a real novelty. Where else could you eat, drink or stay over in a cave...Don't know of any other place that has such character and history
