Story

In the heat of summer, the Caves stay a cool 10 degrees underground! Enjoy exploring amazing natural caverns that were mined for ochre pigment and iron ore for over 4,500 years. Ochre is still produced on a small scale to make artist's pigment, you see the ochre workshop as you walk through the mine buildings. You then wander into the nine impressive caverns open to visitors, with displays throughout. New exciting displays for 2017.

The Caves make a great filming backdrop, they have been used recently to make episodes for DaVinci Demons, Atlantis, Merlin and Dr Who, to name a few.

During school holidays, we run Try Caving activities that you can join for an exhilarating trip into the depths of the mine going well beyond the public areas. Suitable for any able bodied persons from 7yrs up.

My husband and myself visited on Wednesday. A really interesting, fascinating place to visit. Larger than we expected and what we really liked was the way they've kept the caves as authentic and natural as possible. You get all the information about the history of the mining that you need but with no gimmicks. The moving shadow miners and the prehistoric holograms on the water are cleverly done. We were lucky enough to be the first that day so had the caves to ourselves, a bit eerie on our own but it enhanced what was a really great visit. Would thoroughly recommend this.

We did the deep level experience and it was amazing! Went with my kids and two others. John our guide was so helpful and gently encouraged us to be adventurous beyond our wildest expectations as we crawled though worm holes and all sorts of tiny spaces. Felt like we'd been underground for a week by the time we got out because its so other worldly. Kids were pumped. We want to go even deeper next time!

My girlfriend and I took part in a deep level expedition, or guide was John, and he was amazing!! There were only 4 of us in the group, and all varied in ages and abilities, but John managed to get us to push ourselves through s couple of the more challenging routes. He had answers to all of our questions and knew the caves well!!! He was fun and knowledgeable. There was a couple of sketchy climbs, lots of twists and little holes to wriggle through.

Really interesting, impressively laid out and great for all ages. My 4 year old and I spent over an hour in the caves and enjoyed a yummy lunch at the cafe. There is a sunny area outside to eat and a great little playground to keep little ones busy whilst you finish your cuppa!!
